C4 sub direction, looking for advise and exp.
Whats subs (and size)I buy will depend on what I learn here. (looking at JL's and kickers)
Kale mentioned that firing them backwards will gove more volume.
I am more concerned about clean and tight bass.
I am mainly brainstorming here.
my problems, I want to mount the battery in the rear storage area and mount my 2 nitrous bottles in the rear storage unit. so those 2 areas are out.
I want to also build a cover that will go over the rear area, much like the pull-out- shade cover that is in there, but it will be clean and flush with the top of the trim area. this cover will be open behind the seats, so I can reach back there and open the nitrous bottles. it should look pretty much like a convertable.
I do not care about storage space or putting the top back there.
I am thinking about building 2 boxes that would mount on top of the area where the stock speakers are now, this would allow me to fire the subs upward into teh rear glass. I dont know if this would be a good idea.
Or I could fire the subs forward, or side to side like the stock 6" are set up?
And one have any input on what these different firing directions do to sound?
I would consider installing 8's in the rear enclosures.
Install the battery into the rear storage compartment.
I would not recommend covering or sealing the N2O bottles. If a leak starts, it will fill the space rapidly and become a potentially bad situation.
Also, get JL if those are the only 2 brands you are looking at.
1.) I would put your battery (maybe think about one of those Dyna-Volt Mini-Battery's) in the passenger side storage compartment. (Pull out the carpet inside it and make a little mounting location, and run the wires through the factory drain hole in the bottom.)
2.) I would build a box that's 31"long x 32"wide x 13" high. (This will be a perfect flush fit with the rear area.)
3.) I would mount my nitrous bottle (trust me, one 10lb bottle will do ya.) parrallel to the car, in the drivers side of the box.
4.) Make the box, so it is basically two seperate compartments. One for your sub, and one for your nitrous bottle.
5.) The sub will go on the passenger side. Maybe on that side, slope it down in the back, so it's at about a 45º angle firing rearwards.
IMHO, I would put a nice single 10" sub back there and mount the amp on the TOP of the box somewhere (or behind/under the passenger side seat, depending on if it's power or not.) I have 300W RMS running from a Class-D amp, to a Kicker Comp VR 10" sub, in a 1.8cu ft sealed box in my vette, and it hits quite well.
BTW: Here's a picture of my box (But you'll be doing yours ENTIRELY different, this is just to show you the angle you want your sub to be sitting at.
Just curious,
Noel
If that kicker is an older model I can believe the 1.8 cubes, Going with a larger enclosure in a sealed box will get you less spl but also lower output at the extreme lower freqs.

O yeah BTW, the sub is facing up ( towards the rear glass)
with the amp mounted beside it. and the box is .8 cubic feet i believe.
