Installed KVT-910 DVD, KNA-DV3100, Focal Utopia 165W, 5W2, IDMax 10", JL Audio 450/4, 250/1. Considering a KDS-P901, has anyone experience wth this unit, opinions please. I need a powered 5th channel speaker, suggestions for this as well.
i had the kvt-910, the kds-p901 and the kenwood self-amplified center channel in my '99 vr-4. i highly recommend not getting the center channel. they are basically two tweeters that fit in a smaller-than-DIN unit. and since most of the output will probably come from the center, it makes it sound horrible. i had mbquart q's and they really over-whelmed the center channel. so, when i was watching dvds, i used the surround sound but left the center channel off. and even then it only sounded decent but that couldve been for several reasons. I had Qs up front and only RSCs in the rear so that mightve played a part, as well being installed in the stock locations in a 3000GT.
I havent heard any surround sound installs in vettes so Im not sure how itd sound. but its going to be difficult to get a good center stage in a vette unless you go really custom. ideally you should have the same speakers upfront, in the rear, and in the center, but as we know its not always easy to do that.
so bottom line, get the processor? I would. Its not that expensive and it is all controlled via the 910-DVD (hide-away unit, but you knew that ;D). It fills in more circles on the main screen so the system seems more complete. Its very simple to use and does its job pretty well.
It is not necessary to have the same speakers front and rear. The rear speakers in a surround sound still only play a narrow band of sound. Mostly effect type of stuff to give the listener of feeling of being in the movie. Everything else is in the front. I have video in my vechicles and don't use surround sound. Mostly because I do not feel the need to because realisticly watching a movie on 7" monitor will never make you feel like you are in the movie. Nor dod I set in my truck or car and watch all of a movie anyways. I have done several full 5.1 systems in cars and they work well it is just my opion that it is not necessary. On the flip side...is a video system in a vette really necessary? It is illegal to have it installed the way I do but I bet I am not the only one like that :)
