OK, after many months of designing, fabrication and building, I finally have some progress to show. The system is not yet one hundred percent complete, but I made so much progress actually installing over the weekend, I had to share. Hopefully by Christmas I'll have all of the tuning/trim/upholstery/carpet etc. done. Enjoy. . . .
I made this custom HU mount, with integral parametric EQ, at my brother's machine shop. (It's sure nice to have a CNC-mill at my disposal.)
The HU is a McIntosh MX406; PEQ is an Audiobahn AEQ8
The trim piece that holds the tweeter/mid-range combo was also CNC-milled. This speaker pod fits, mostly unobstructed, behind the Bose grill.
Tweeter: 1" Dynaudio D28 (from their home speaker)
Midrange: 3" Dynaudio MD140 (automotive)
Mid-Bass: 6.5" Scan Speak 18W/8535-00
<Note the relocation of the power control module to accomodate the speaker pod.>
This picture shows how the speaker pod fits behind the stock grills. I got this door panel, for modelling, from a forum member (sorry, I forgot who). My actual door panel is all black and unadulterated.
One pair of JL 8W7's. Each subwoofer is in its own .875 cu. ft. sealed enclosure. The enclosure extends forward of the trunk underneath where the top folds. The Aluminum plate in the middle is removable to configure the enclosure; when removed, I will be able to bolt on an additional .125 cu. ft. "add-on" box with an external port transforming this into a one-cubic foot bass-reflex design. It's a convertible for my convertible!
In the sealed configuration, I still have room for a small weekend bag...
McIntosh MC4000M
6 channels, 1000W of good old American power.
Another angle of the box as viewed from the passenger compartment.
Oh, and of course, the car.
...and this is why it took so long
Amazingly, after initial install, the sound of this system was very flat with decent imaging and good soundstage. I still have to tweak the passive crossovers I built (I'll post photos whence those are dialed in). And I am still tinkering with the PEQ. This weekend I will begin fabricating the "add-on" extensions for the subwoofer enclosures. After that, who knows. . .
That's all for now. Look out for new photos coming soon.

Yeah looks good. Man I have not seen Dyn's for a while. I used to have a set of 7's that I installed in several of my own cars. Very very nice. Looks good.

I had the Dynaudio stuff from an older install from a few years ago. Although they no longer sell raw Dynaudio drivers, Speaker City in Burbank, CA still had some voice coils for the D28's. Would you believe I gave the Dynaudio 7's away? That's the reason for the Scan Speak mid-bass.

I swear I still have mine in a box somewhere that I jsut can not find. At least that is what I tell myself everytime I wish I still had those speakers.

Which Scan Speak Driver did you use.
I was afraid somebody would ask that. I don't remember, I'll have to check, get back to you Monday.
How well does it work free-air?
Works fine free air above 100Hz. I haven't had a listen without the HP filter, though. If you're interested, I can have a listen without the HP filter, it's as easy as a flick of a switch.
sweet
You have some very nice hi-end equipment there (Ed. note: Except the Audiobahn) . Install looks  too

OK, I wound up going home for lunch. The Scan Speak is an 18W/8535-00 (available from Speaker City, U.S.A. http://www.speakercity.com/scanspeak...ver/mw.shtml). I turned off the subwoofers and HP filter. With 3dB of gain at 45Hz, these things sound great in my doors. I don't remember where they roll off to the Dynaudio midrange (probably around 400-500 Hz). The series inductor is 2.25mH with a 20uF parallel capacitor, so we're talking about a 12dB/octave slope. Free-air, with a lot of volume, they did not fall apart. I kinda remember Frank at Speaker City telling me that they'd like to see about .25 cu. ft. sealed.
Early on, when benchtesting them prior to the install, I put the Scan Speaks in a small box (~.25 cu.ft.) with only the Dynaudio D28 tweeter and no LP filter or midrange driver and they were fantastic in my living room. I only added the Dyn MD140 midrange because I had it laying around and I liked the challenge of fitting 10 lbs. of *poop* in a 5 lb. bag.

I looked long and hard at the 18w/8531G00. I loved the specs, talked to many about them, but couldn't come up with the sealed or bass reflex box they really need in the doors. I tried, but I finally gave up. :( Also looked at some Seas drivers too. I really wanted a driver to play from 1k down to 70hz. I have ID CD-2 HLCD's to take care of the 1k and up.
I settled on the Kicker RMB-8's for now. Not nearly at the same level of Scan or Seas, but the work surprisingly well upto about 600Hz.

Really love the way you mount your HU, flush with the stock climate control.
I've built the mouting kit for my Alpine but since the HU is too deep, it still sticked out 1/4" instead of 1/2".
I'm using carbon fiber instead of aluminum.
Good work!

I just couldn't stand aftermarket HU adapters. I actually had to modify the back of the McIntosh HU to make it flush. Two pairs of RCA's that were exitting the back unit ran into my HVAC plenum. They now exit the unit from the side allowing me flush the HU a little deeper.
