Head Unit wiring in a '76 + Speaker question
I just installed a Kenwood tape deck in the vette and it works...
... BUT when I turn the ignition off, the next time I turn it on all of the presets are gone and the clock goes back to 12:00. I have the Constant Pawer wire spliced into the orange wire that goes to the cigarrette lighter. I assume it works, but i haven't checked it with a tester yet.
Also, the small fuze box attached to the new head unit has a red and a yellow. The yellow says ACCESSORY power and the red is for IGNITION. I hooked the yellow up to the Vette's yellow wire, nothing. When I hook the red to it, it works. SO which wire goes on which?
SPEAKERS
I have some 5x7's I would like to install in the kick panels. Do I need to make a template and mount the speakers with a metal surround around them, or can I just screw them in where they fit without the surround?

Well if your orange wire worked on the cig lighter than you would not loose memory to the radio. Check it with a test light. I do not know why you would have two wires on a radio one saying accessory and for ignition. There is no reason for the radio to be on during the ignition process. What model of Kenwood radio are you installing? Maybe I can find the install instructions on the net and tell you what those wires are for.
As far as your speakers. If there are gaps around the speaker then you want to make some kind of mounting plate to close those gaps.
