I recently purchased the Alpine CDA-7894 Headunit with built in amplifier which pushes 60Wx4. Along with that I got a pair of Audiobahn ABF25T 5.25" 2-Way 85W speakers for the doors and Audiobahn ABF29T 6x9" 2-Way 165W for the rear. That sounds good all hooked up now but im about to buy some subs for a little bump. They are 2-Audiobahn AW1051T 10" 300W Flame Excursion series subwoofers. Now, if I got those along with a 600W amp and ran 250W to each sub, would I have enough power left over to put in a pair of Audiobahn ABF46T 4x6" 80W speakers for my dash enclosures??? Thanks. Other ideas would be helpful...
Re: Question about wattage and speakers... (-=Persephone=-)
You can't just split power off of an amp to seperate speakers like that. Secondly, I would advise staying away from Audiobahn in the future, since they are primarily designed to look good, with performance as an afterthought.
I would get a single good quality sub, a decent amp for the sub, and an amp for the front stage(ditch the rear speakers, power the front components only)

Re: Question about wattage and speakers... (Metal Wulf)
You can split power off to another set of speakers. You can run a two channel to a pair of subs and a pair of mids. It is called running the amp mixed mono. It requires the use of passive xovers though. That aside.....I would not recommend the set up you are talking about either. With those speakers you selected you would be better off running them on another amp.
As for Audiobahn....yes they are designed to look good and perform well for the PRICE they are sold for. There is plenty of better equipment out there but not in the same price range you can get Audiobahn for.
Re: Question about wattage and speakers... (-=Persephone=-)
Kale is right, head units might say 4X60 watts but that would only be possible if it got struck by lightning. 15 watts X four would be my guess since the current trend for head unit manufacturers to quadruple the actual wattage, ie Pioneer says 50X4 when 12.5X4 is the true rating at 12 volts, 20 to 20K Hz, and less that .1% THD.
Your current set-up sounds okay to me but I'm no big fan of rear speakers either.
Your idea about spilting the power from the 600 watt amp is a very bad idea.
(truth hurts). Just hook up the subs to that amp.
Maybe un-hook the 6X9s and use the deck power to run the 4X6s. That will give you a stronger front stage. That is my "other idea".
good luck
Re: Question about wattage and speakers... (knewblewkorvette)
There is a simple rule of thumb when it comes to amplifiers. It takes power to make power. So how is a radio that only has a 18ga power ground wire going to make as much power as an amp that requires a 10ga according to the manufactures specs?

You could run a 100 watt amp off of 18 gauge wire if the run was only a few inches...
The reason a headunit cannot make as much power as an amp is because recievers don't have power supplies to run higher voltage rails, so they are limited to +/- 13 volts or so(about 24 watts rms). Amps run a seperate power supply that allows them higher rail voltages, thus the ability to make more power.
Re: Question about wattage and speakers... (TheWacoKid)
There is the heat issue too.
I have two amps rated at 12.5 watts per channel, they are 26" long by 12" wide :D O' by the way, they are only 2 channel too
I've seen head units now with cooling fans but still...... 60 watts per channel...no way
