Default 4x6's in the dash...

Can i mount a pair of 4x6's in under my dash pad in my '88 coupe??? If so, whats the maximum mounting depth?? I found some Audiobahn 4x6's with a mounting depth of 2 inches. So will this work??? Thanks...

You should have the same as me.....I have an 88 as well and thats what is in there now...4x6...There is plenty of mounting depth in there...the only hard time is getting the dash pad back in there as the magnet will hit when reinstalling it...but you can get it...I did the same thing....now mine is all different....but it was like yours before....

MAYBE. A component set in the doors (6.5") would sound a lot better. Put the tweets in the dash if you'd like. The Audiobahn 6.5 components actually don't sound too bad. (ABC600T) although you can do better for the same or less $$$ (CDT CL61, DEI 650.2, Crystal)

I've got 6x9's in the rear, 5.25's in the doors with tweeters above my seatbelt mounts and it sounds unreal for just speakers, i want to expand the front sound a little more instead of buying a sub, i like having the little amount of storage space i have.

Ideally, youd have ONLY a 6.5 component set up front, with the tweeters as far away from you as possible. (yet as close to the mids as possible)

adding more speakers is just adding more cancellation and problems.

heck, jsut move the tweeters you have to your dash pad. Just tape them there for now. Tell me how you like the difference.

I wish i would have done that. I put some Eclipse 4x6's in the dash and i have had nothing but problems. The dash pad doesnt fit quite correctly (its about a millimeter too high off the dash) and the right front speaker used to rattle when there was loud bass. It doesnt do that anymore b/c of the sub but i wish i could just put some tweets in the dash and then put a component set in the doors but i have no idea about how to get into the door space because i had the non bose set up and there are no cut outs for the door speaker so i dont know if i would have to build a spot for the speakers or what. Either way i would go with what Kale said, he always has good advice on the subject of car audio...... i might have to look into doin a door speaker mod in the future and eliminating the dash speakers by takin em out and putting tweets in there.

Put 4x6 in my 87 dash, and it doesn't fit just right... going to move them to the doors and leave the dash speaker location empty.... also put a post here on any problems or issues in installing them in the doors...

5.25s or 6.5s sound a ton better than 4x6s. Put that size ni the doors instead. 4x6's will be ineffective in that location

Here is the skinny on 4x6's in the dash. BTW, I have a 35th Anniversary Edition as well. #1725 and I have installed a few serious systems in it, including putting stuff in the dash. First of all, I agree with Kale about going with a 6.5" separate system in the doors but if you are dead set on 4x6's in the dash use 4x6 PLATE speakers and not coaxial, they suck major azz.

As for installing them, some 4x6's will have a mounting depth of over 1". In that case the speaker on the driver side will fit fine but the speaker on the passenger side will not because it hits the AC duct going to the passenger side. You will have to use a heat gun and heat the plastic of the duct just enough to make it pliable and push it in creating a slight indention. The 4x6 will then fit just fine. I have done that on several C4's, it doesn't harm anything and it is the only way to get the dash pad back on correctly.

You will also have to cut the plastic on the speaker bezel in order to get a speaker mounted on it. It is solid plastic now because you have the Blose option on that 35th.

Now, all said and done, I would recommend you not even mess with the dash, stick with speakers in the doors. Also, I'm sure you are not harming the interior of that 35th in any way to install your system right? If you need any help on how to install a nice system in that car without harming a single part on it just let me know, I'll be glad to help out.

Your 35th is look'in good.

Here is a pick of the system in the back of mine, the flush mounted amp rack flips up for access to the storage bins.
