Default Portable GPS Systems

What system is the easiest to use. I am looking to purchase one for various shows around the central US. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I bought the Roadmate 700 from Magellan. It is completely plug and play, no downloading or unlocking. The mounting bracket attaches to the air conditioning duct and then you simply plug it into the lighter outlet. It has the entire 48 states loaded. I bought mine at Best Buy but you can find them at most popular electronics stores or on-line.

My friend has the Garmin Street Pilot.. Its a cool little gadget, just tell it the type of resturant, gas station, etc and it will find the closest one, it hasn't failed us yet

Friend of mine uses Delorme street atlas with a notebook or PDA. He likes the bigger screen on the notebook.

I did alot of reaching on all the portable GPS systems before settling on the Magellan Roadmate 700 and I love it to death.
I was initially going to go with the IQUE, then read roadmate 500/700.. The 500 is the cheeper of the two but quickly found out. The Roadmate 500, you must buy a card big enough (1 gig) to even hold the entire US maps and the 700 already comes with a internal 10 gig hard drive.
So, by the time you buy a 500 at $799.00 to $899.00, the 1 gig card at $250.00 plus, you still have to down load the maps You are already at the price of the model 700.. You can buy the 700 on ebay (from a "reputable") seller/dealer for about 1049.00 dollars. Best Buy and Computer City, you will pay at least $1150.00 to $1299.00 dollars for it.. :seeya :auto:

This is how I went. I had the older Delorme GPS on a laptop a few years ago and loved it. I got their new one (much smaller) and it works great. Planning to get the equipmet needed to hook it up to my PDA so I can use it on trails as well.

The biggest reason I went this way is that the laptop gives a much bigger screen and for the same money (~$1000) you get a real computer to boot !

I have a portable GARMIN 196 GPS with back-lit high res. screen. I mainly use it for flying but since it also has land and sea maps, I use it in the C5 (12V plug-in, velcro-swivel base on dash). It has 24 satellite WAAS accuracy (within 3 metres) Additional city maps with restaurant etc. can be downloaded. Works well for me.
