Engine Noise in Speakers
I have a 1989 convertible. I am getting serious engine noise in the speakers. When the engine is off there is a slight hissing from one of the rear speakers. Think the Bose amp is bad because speaker doesn't come on right away when radio is on. As far as the engine noise in the speakers, it's driving up the wall. Any ideas on what it could be?

Then something changed in the system. Either a ground path or a bad component. Knowing the year of your car and BOSE it is proably one of the amps. I would take one out at a time till the noise goes out of the others.

Is it a whine like a dremel/dentist drill or more of a ticking? What kinda plug wires you using? I heard some have some EMI/RFI issues....but i'd check the OEM ground of the radio/amps and the power antenna, make sure they are still clean. A service manual should tell where they are.

The spark plug wires are original I believe. It has 64,000 miles on it. What does EMI/RFI mean. What if someone put cheap plugs in it? Oh and the sound is a definite whine like a dremel. It coincides with the engine idle and RPM.

I highly doubt spark plugs are going to do it. The whine is a direct result of RPM. It is a noise generated by the alternator. Your problem is going to lie in the audio system and is most likely in one of the amplifiers. Either take out the amplifiers yourself one at a time till the noise is gone or take it to a qualified car audio shop.
