Do all 2001 have the harness for the CD changer? If so where is it? My car did not come with a changer and would like to add one. Is there an aftermarket changer that will work with the factory head unit?
no C5 came with the harness if the CD changer wasn't ordered from the factory.
The interface protocol from the head unit and the CD changer is proprietary. There may be one model Pioneer that will work, but it is just like the factory one (meaning: no better quality).
If you want to use the buttons on the head unit (more than just the volume control) than a "protocol converter" is what you need.
PIE GM10/PC-KNW KENWOOD “N” COMPATIBLE 6 OR 10-DISC CHANGERS (MODEL 669, 719 OR 667, 717 IN ”N” POSITION)
There are a number of non-stock CD changers that will work with the stock C5 head unit. One is the Rockford Fosgate RFX-8601, 6 disc changer, which can often be found on EBAY for $50 to $100. It needs a simple cable rewire to connect to the stock GM CD Changer harness. That is what I have for my 01 C5. Do a search, I posted instructions for this in the past. There are also some Clarion and Panasonic built 6 disc CD changers that will work, that were stock in some other GM models (I dont have the GM part #s handy, but could provide if you are interested). These changers can also be found on EBAY for a reasonable price.
