Default Need a Little Advice- C5 Speaker Upgrade

I was looking to upgrade my rear speakers and the 3 1/2 inch door speakers in my 2001 Z06. I have spoken to two different audio shops anmd gotten two very different views. Shop #1 says replace the 5 1/4's with 2 way co axials and put tweeters into the door handles. The mids and highs will sound better. Shop #2 says can't do that has the Bose system utlizesd an internal frequency cross over system. Can't add tweeters nor change speakers and there is no place to pick up a cross over point from??? Shop #2 wants to do components and a Boston Sub in the rear well area.
I'm not looking to change out the head unit or add amps and subs. Just bring out the mids and highs a little.

Need some advice on the two different views.

good luck... I don't think this is gonna be easy.

Your hope is that someone like Nelson V. chimes in. He has a better understanding of how the C5 Bose works.

shop #2 doesn't know their a$$ from 3rd base!

do it yourself!

I upgraded my 3 1/2" door speakers with a nice coaxial speaker, and I also upgraded my rear speakers with Infinity 505cs component speakers, mounted the component tweeter next to the rear speakers. the sound is 100% better!

Thanks you for responding! I thought it a little odd that Shop #2 was taking the stance that they did! I was thinking using the Infinty 5 1/4 Kappa 2 ways in the rear and the Infinity 3 1/2's in the doors. I downloaded the article on changing the door 3 1/2" speakers. Question- how difficult was it to use the component speakers (seperate mountings?) I have a Z06 so the backs are 5 1/4's. I need to look at the back moldings to see how to remove them to expose the rear speakers.
Many Thanks!!

the rear speakers in the Z06 are the same size as the convertible.

installing the component speakers was very easy, the 5 1/4" speaker installs just like the factory speaker, I bought adapters from circuit city for the speaker wiring harness so that I wouldn't have to cut the factory plug off. I just shoved the component crossover under the carpet behind the speaker and mounted the component tweeter next to the 5 1/4" speaker grills. pretty much "plug and play".

Thanks for that vote of confidence, Bogus. But in all honesty, Rick, all I know about the C5 Bose is how to remove it.
There seems to be some good info in this old thread:

You might also search this section for "Adapters" as I believe I have seen discussions about adapters that allow you to interface with the factory Bose.

Nelson-
RPOZ4Z-

Thanks for the information and the attached thread! Wow- 99HT really captured the "essence" of the Delco BOSE C5 system. The article also points out with what Shop #1 (in my thread) originally said- tweeters in the door handle area (very directional) and replace the two rear 5 1/4's.

This forum is great!!
