Default Prefab C4 Storage box Sub enclosures

Hey all, since I got sick of trying to find a prefab box for my 1986 coupe, I am now working with a company to design prefab subwoofer boxes for the C4 model vettes for the passenger side storage compartment. The company Im working with already does C5 boxes that are REALLY nice and well made. I am putting this thread out to see how many people would be interested in a prefab box, with the removal of your dual storage compartment door ring (and its 8 or so bolts) would fit upon both openings and provide space for one 8", 10" or possible 12" sub (square or round). It will still be a few months before they are ready for production, but im seeing who is interested. If you are interested, private message me and i'll keep your message until the boxes come available, on which i'll notify you. But chances are I will make a new thread for it as well when it becomes available for sale.

The box design, will just fit over both storage compartment wells after you remove the cover ring. The box should bolt to factory holes in the C4 frame. The enclosure should house about 1 cubic foot of space, and be probably made of MDF as so you can modifiy it to any other odd needs you may have easlily. The company that is going to produce this box is http://www.subthump.com/ check them out on their already nicely produced C5 enclosures for the rear well.

Remember, try to PM me if you are interested, as so we know of what to expect in the way of future orders. I dont expect the box to cost outragously expensive, since Subthump already sells their other prefab C5 boxes cheap IMO.

Thanks all

PM sent

Keep me in mind !

You might want to have them put a hinged door on the drivers side. My 94 has the ABS stuff in that compartment so easy access is still required.

subthump make a nice product. I'm either going to go single 10" in the compartment or dual 8's in the 6x9 holes, so this kind of interests me. I'd have to see the finished product before I make a decision though. I am interested to see what they come up with though.

Yeah myself im probably going to do the 8's in the 6x9 locations as well as a sub in the storage compartment, proably a high end 10, which really, im spec'ing the Subthump boxes to be designed for. I really need some input on two designs, and i hope you all help some.

1. Flat panel sub box replacement. Baiscally, replacing the dual compartment door assembly ring and putting the enclosure in its place, with the original mounting holes being used (of course, longer bolts to include the 1/2" highth of the board). This would support one driver with about .8 to .9 cubic foot space for a speaker. In this configuration, the original carpeting could stay in place if the user wished, as so he could modify it to whatever he wishes.

2. Raised enclosure, of which its highth reaches just below the bottom of the targa top mounts. This would allow ALOT more air space for a driver, and alot more porting options / speaker manufacture options. Estimated elcosure size would be more like 1.7 cubic feet of useable volume.

3. Raised enclosre, of which its highth reaches just below the bottom of the targa top mounts, but the box is divided into two sides, one for the speaker volume, the other side (located above the drivers side stoarge area) would be a amp storage enclosure. So the user could mount their amp behind the driver in a covered box while to just the right of it, would be the speaker enclosure.

Any questions??? INPUT??? I need it now before I finish drawings.

I like the first idea. It keeps it kind of stock. The only problem is that you will have to work around the ABS unit in the later cars and you will have a notch in your carpet from the old lid handles. The ideal situation would be one that fits under the stock lid frame, but we're asking for prefab, not a miracle.

well here is my take on the ABS thing : How many times do you really have to mess with that unit? I owned my last C4 for 5 years and never once needed to look at it. So, I figure, as long as you can remove the prefab box, and get at it, you should be ok. If you are having ABS problems bad enough to have to mess with the ABS controller, you probably wont need the sub box hooked up and working anyways, for im sure you would want to stop your car as well as jam to some tunes. But since the prefab box is made from MDF, an average person could cut out a hole in the top of the mounting plate with a jigsaw to get at the ABS if they are really worried about it. Also, I was thinking that the original carpet could be held down to the box top with velcro or similar. It shouldnt look too out of place, but where the locking mechanism once was in the carpet, there will be a hole. Im sure someone can come up with an idea to hide it, or not hide it at all.

But to let you all know, Subthump as agreed that the preliminary drawings will make it to production, so option #1 in my last message will become a reality as a first box design. There is a 50/50 chance on a 2nd box design for larger enclosure volume speakers.
