Default storage compartment sub box?

i removed the lids and frame piece that covers the storage area. can i put a piece of mds 3/4 inch on the top to cover both storage holes and put a 10" sub on the pas. side and seal it on all 4 sides with weatherstripping then put some fibrglass insolation around the inside of the compartment. if i build a box i wil have only .55cu. ft. but if i can just put in the top and seal it i would have about 1cu. ft. i hope i explained this well enough......thanks

Well, first of all. You didnt do a search on your topic before posting Otherwise, you would have found 9,343,098 threads on this, and some Ive even started. But thats O.K.
Its just that the forum is being over-run by redundant questions that were addressed in a thread months ago. Not your fault, for the most part.

Subthump.com will be making C4 prefab subwoofer enclosures for the storage compartments soon. I am personally seeing to this, (providing a vehicle to design enclosures off of, and making CAD drawings for production). They already make a nice C5 subwoofer box. Check them out, at http://www.subthump.com . ... bookmark them, we dont have a product up on the page quite yet. Maybe in a month or so, expect to see a page on the site to provide a couple of design choices for you. We hope to at least have 2 to choose from.

You can either watch the subthump.com site, or PM me to ask if there is any updates on product availability.

Hey that sounds pretty cool, but why would you cover both holes with mdf when all your using is 1 sub? As for covering the top of the hole, I would precut the hole in the wood first, then FIBERGlass the inside ALL OVER especially in the corners, do at least a couple of layers of resin to make it as much as "airproof as possible, then screw down the board on top and start sealing up under the board (where it meets the car).....what kind of sub are you using? I was thinking of doing that same setup you are, but decided to let someone build me a Nice fiberglass box with some curve to it, that sits at the back of the hatch with 2 IDMAX 10's, and I'll put all my other stuff in the cubby holes, ALPINE Products,12 discchanger, brain unit for my indash tv unit, and the sound processor, Now I figure out how I'm going to mount my amp in the car, its about 34" long, its the mcintosh 4000m---not your typical amp length.....this is all in my 85 vette

Try a shoehorn!

seriously though, the hatch in the back only has 32" from fender well to fender well, but maybe you can squeeze it in towards the back latch, or maybe mount it on a wall under your hatch lock. Its a popular spot for an amp rack.

Yeah,,,I didn't even think of that part, installing it, All I thought of was getting that amp....If I can't find a place (I doubt I will) I will make some kind of support brackets out of 3/4 mdf to overlapp the cubby holes and mount the amp RIGHT behind the seats at an angle--supported really well though (amp is like 42 lbs) OR I will just mound it from side to side (above the fender wells--course I won't be able to store targa top there--but oh well, soundz come first.....I got someone making me some custom kickpanel speaker pods for my doors for under $200, I have the dynaudios.....

Heh, i hear ya... I tell ya though, when I stop worring about the targa fitting, i'll just put in a wall behind the seats and put one 15" Tumlut back there. Unfortuantly, Im sure it will end up being that way.

I added up all the costs of buying tools, supplys, and time & effort together in building my own stuff, and it of course outweighs how much it would cost if I just payed somone to do it. But, ive found that if you dont do it myself, im sure to not like it. Same thing happened when I was painting my 73 Nova. I paid someone to do it, I didnt like how it was done, I ended up painting it. Probably set me back about 1k just because of it, but I was at least happy in the end. And I could live with little imperfections. If I would have continued to pay someone to do the paint/body work, I would have been outragously picky on everything. I think i stopped worring about cost effectiveness the minute I decided I wanted to have car audio as a hobby. Now, its all down hill. I'll NEVER get to the point where I wont upgrade something. Its quite a disease, and just as expensive as drugs.

snoopdan i did a search but i didn't get a specific enough answer. i guess i could cut out just the pass. side of the compartment and put a top on one side. i have a 10" rock. fosgate and i think i need about .8cu.ft. if i put the fiberglass resin in the hole should i put in some fiberglass insol. in the hole as well to help with sound quality or is it even needed?

Or, you can wait until Subthump.com comes out with prefab boxes!

Right now im fiberglassing as I type (damn fibers are everywhere on me). Its a sticky job. Im waiting for some resin to dry right now for my own little seperate project. Some people on the forum here have done the fiberglass mold right in the car (such as DEIAGGIE). His box is pretty sick....check it out...just do a search on his nick.

good luck with mounting all that...i spent a long time scratching my head trying to figure out where to mount 2 Monitor 1 mk 4.70s and 2 Arc Audio 1500D-Rs in my car...unless you want to loose the ability to carry the targa, you will not be able to fit that amp in the car as it is too long...i wanted to mount the arcs on the back wall but they were 1" too long and ended mounting the Monitors back there and I am mounting each Arc Vertically behind each seat...
