For those considering the AVIC-N1, a fixed screen double din unit is coming. This could drop right into some C4s and mean less modification for the C5.
frickin' sweet
I swore I would never purchase a DVD player and screen for the dash. I also swore I would not buy a nav system for any car. Well, I swear now I wish I had a couple of thousand bones laying around so I could stick that in my Vette.
This is EatRice under Optics name. That is a sweet unit. Another one is the new AVIC N2. The N2 is going to have the new nav traffic updates ..tells you if there is a reported traffic problem in your exact area. I believe the N2 is the only aftermarket radio that is going to offer that feature. I did not read everything about the D1...maybe it will have it also.

For some odd reason I can't get to Pioneers website but I did a search on the D-1. It looks to be an N2 just in a fixed screen body instead of the flip up screen. I am now sold on this model. The only draw back of the N2 was covering the vents and I really did not want to lose teh coin storage of the ashtray by moving everything down. As soon as they release it and I get it installed I will post some pictures.

OK guys, I'm just starting my search for THE stereo unit for my '04 C5. Figure I'd take a year to research (and save up money) but my starting point is whether the C5 is a single DIN / DIN and a half or double DIN? I really like the AVIC-NI unit and it is leading the pack at this time.
i've been looking at the kenwood, eclipse and the D-1 for quite some time. unfortunately the D-1 won't be out for purchase until late march but it looks like a nice unit. i just wonder how it compares to the kenwood and eclipse counterparts. makes for a much cleaner install that's for sure.
the only way i would switch it for my kenwood would be if i knew it would play DVD-rs with MP3 burned on them...the only think i am really lacking in my kenwood is different backgrounds, they rest is fairly good and REALLY like having the ability to burn 100 albums on a DVD
I'm not that experienced at car audio installs, but my question is how will the D-1's double din size fit cleanly into the C-5's opening? Isn't the C-5 a din and 1/2?

won't fit *cleanly* without modification of the divider bar and moving the a/c controls down. It can fit with out doing that but you'll have to shave down the divider bar and the top of the center panel and it doesn't as clean/professional

Scott,
You're right. I've heard of some people taking a Dremmel tool and cutting the interior trim piece, then filling the gap with some sort of body putty and painting to match. It appears to require some experiance and skill in this area. Of which, I have none.
I wonder if the screen will come too far into the shifter area when it is "open". I assume it would open up similar to the Eclipse unit shown on the same page.
I like this style better compared to the Flip out screens in the Vette
I would like to see someone who did a custom install in there C5 with something like this 2 Din style screen
I sell the AVIC-N1s all the time at work and they are amazing... and are waiting for the AVIC-N2s to come out. I gues I will have to get a D1 in stock to play with.
Ipod thing looks like a must. I cant imagine how nice it would be to have a list of thousands of songs ready to play. Wonder if the list come up on the Pioneer screen or if you have to control it throuh the I-Pod still
I'm curious if that Eclipse can be made to play DVDs when you drive. If so I would take that. Otherwise it would be the N1. I like the flush fixed display of the D1 but can't stand that it can't be made to play DVDs while driving.
The eclipse unit is a really nice piece. My boos has it in his hummer. Actually he had the N1 in the hummer but felt it didnt look right with the flip out screen and put the eclipse in. He is real happy with it. And yes you can play DVDs while driving

I was at a local stereo shop (near Philadelphia) and they were going to install the new Eclipse touchscreen unit (5435?) but they wanted $700 to fabricate the dash piece. I'm not bleeding money so I am either going to try and do it myself or, better yet, find someone on the forum who makes something like this.
