Aftermarke system in '87
1. What speakers fit in the doors and rear without modifiying the existing speaker ports (much)?
2. What head unit will fit in the existing space without mods?
Any other advice on installation would also be greatly appreciated ~ thanks
Lots. There are 3.5" to 4" converter rings that mount in the stock bose enclosures that lets you put in whatever flavor of 4" you wish.
And for your next question will be to that is, "what 4 inch speaker should I buy" - thats up to you.. We cant tell you what you like. We CAN tell you what is a waste of your money, if that helps any. I can give you some brand names that you WILL be happy with. They are : Infinity, CTD, Orion, MB Quart, Polk, JL- you wont go wrong with these. Mind you, they all have bottom line verisons of their 4" full range drivers, so get the good version.

Pioneer DEH series head units fit nicely, and look pretty good if you have a stock interior still. If you have a grey/black interior, they look real good. But reallly, you can get any head unit to fit in there, with a proper kit. Metra makes a ton of kits for all vette versions for all kinds of head units. Just do a google on "METRA CORVETTE" and you'll find a ton of leads.
hope this helps

Do I need 4" speakers all around or can I put bigger ones in the rear?
If I go with the Pioneer head unit, do I need an adapter kit (brackets) to install it? If so do you know which ones.
Thanks again help
You can put the 4"s in all the way around, and they'd fit nice in snug and pretty in there, but you could do so much better with the back.
Here are a few door pix from early year vettes :

The back speaker locations can handle a 6x9 straight drop in , with maybe a little of force to get it in. Or, you can get 4-5-6 inch to 6x9 adaptors to make other smaller speakers fit. Or, you can even do what alot of c4 owners have done, and shove 8" free air subs (or subs with a high q) into the rear locations, by removing the 6x9 plate, tracing its outline onto a MDF or other wood type plate, cutting it out, then mounting the subs back there. It DOES take a bit of fabbing, if your up to it. But the payoff is great. Here are some pics :

Quite honestly its been a couple of hundred installs since I did my pioneer, and cant remember if I used anything.. I dont THINK I did. If anything, some roll form would be handy to keep around anyways. Here is a pic of my head unit.

Hope this helps some
