I know many diecast collectors had their beginnings in the pre-diecast days, so I thought it would be neat to find out what got each of us going in "little" Vettes. I'm guessing for most it's probably plastic models and/or Hot Wheels. I had many Hot Wheels back in the "redline" days, but I also had a little brother! I think what actually got me started on Vettes was my first plastic model, the Tom Daniel's California Street Vette. My parent's got it for me for my 11th birthday. From then on, I've pretty much built only Corvettes and big rigs. It's a hobby I never grew out of!
My friend bought hotwheels and then got me into buying them too. At first I bought everything that was a real car and then I realized I didn't have the bank account to do that. So then I cut it down to Chevy, then just Camaro and Corvettes and then just Corvettes. And like collecting goes, the more I looked the more I wanted them all and started buying the bigger and more expensive ones. HAHA, a real expensive 1:18 to me is 30 dollars though. But now I am seeing all the quality ones and want those instead of my Wal-mart ones but being in college (and not working) I cant afford it at all.
Good question. I don't think I can really pinpoint it, unfortunately. I used to love hotwheels and matchbox cars as a kid in the early 80's, but I can't say that's what got me into diecasts. I've only built a few plastic models in my time, so that can't be it either. I think it really started when I bought my '81 Vette almost 3 years ago. Shortly after that, I saw a couple of really cool Burago Viper Diecasts that I picked up for about $10 each (at the time, I didn't know this was sacrilege.) A few weeks later a came across some pretty cool UT '78 Vettes. At the time, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I bought one of every color as well as the '78 PC. At that point, I was absolutely hooked. So if I remember correctly, my first 1/18th scale diecast was a Viper  , but my first Vette model was one of the UT '78 models. Not a bad one to start with I guess.
I can't really pinpoint it either. I was always into cars, had tons of HotWheels and yards of track. Did a few snap-together models, including some Vettes, but I was never the artistic type. That's why I love the diecasts. Looking great right out of the box!

I still have this one. I built it when I was in my teens and now I am 41. It has survived several moves and been partailly disassembled and reglued, but is still pretty much as it was then. I started on models at about 6 years old and never outgrew them either. I have some mild customs such as a 40 Ford with a 79 Camaro nose and some other strange combos.
