My tranny over-heats after ~5 laps at Road Atlanta. Car is equipped with a C5R-427 (490 RWHP / 520 RWTQ), FLP Stage V tranny, Vigilante 3-Disc Torque Converter, 3.42 Rear. Chuck at FLP even designed an upgraded tranny cooler with fan. Still didn't work.
When I was running the stock 3.15 rear, a Yank 3000 TC, and a B&M Tranny Cooler at 460 RWHP / 485 RWTQ, the tranny did not over-heat.
Any Ideas?
The good news (at least while I was on the track) the car was kick-azz. I followed an experienced SCCA driver (he was there getting ready for an upcoming SCCA event) with his modified Z06 (our power is about the same) for three laps & stayed with him through all the turns. I felt good about that since I only get to the track about 5 times a year.
I have the same problem when I track my car. I think that the exhaust pipes running along the trans contribute to the heat. I am going to wrap the pipes near the trans with header wrap in the attempt to reduce heat transfer. The pipes get really hot evidenced as by the fact that they are blue due to the heat. I'll let you know if this works.
With a 3 disk vigilante converter, you may want to consider a lockup switch to lock the convertor (and eliminate the heat generating slip) in 3rd and 4th gear. The 427 should have plenty of torque with the convertor locked up to keep you going fast
