I think this whole allocation business needs to be reworked. I had to go out of state to buy because no allocations available locally. Then had the "pleasure" of trying to arrange a so-called "courtesy" delivery. Got quotes from the local dealers ranging from $1,000 - $300 and some who just told me to buzz off. For a $50,000 ride you'd think the buying experience would be handled a little more intelligently.
mrich -- I know what you are saying. I have had a new Corvette ordered with the local dealer since January 27. At this time I only have an order entered, no acceptance by GM. Since I ordered, the dealer has had 2 allocations, both times they entered my order, and both times it came back as a convert, only I have oredered a coupe. They have ordered and sold a convert. and a coupe since I have ordered. I realy think this is GM's fault and not the dealer's. As you said, when you are paying $50,000 for a car you should not have to take what GM says you will order, nor should you have to wait 7 - 10 months to get it. A dealer about 200 miles away called me today to say they got a coupe in (in my color and most of the options I want) and was wondering if I would be interested in it. Something wrong when some dealers can get cars for stock (in hopes of selling) and a dealer with a sold order (and a deposit) can't get the car. I really think GM has got to look at this situation or some folks are going to look at other manufacturers for autos. I really hate to go to some other dealer, as my salesman has worked very hard at trying to get the car for me, but GM is not cooperating.
JerryT - I agree, it's frustrating. I much prefer doing business locally but didn't really have a choice if I wanted the car. I've driven Porsches the last 12 years and after the first couple of phone calls trying to arrange the courtesy delivery I was ready to just forget the whole thing and buy a boxster. If you're thinking of going the same route and buying from someone who has allocations available, for what it's worth I placed my order on 8/11, it was accepted by Chevrolet on 8/15 and my TPW is mid-september. Good luck.
