Default Steering "Quickener"

Has anybody tried something like this: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku in a C5?

I don't know about you all, but I think the steering in my C5Z is too slow/soft for what the car is. My buddy with a WRX just did a 1.5:1 quickener column from these guys: http://column.landefabrication.com/ and it is an AWESOME change.

I haven't found anybody that makes one specific for a C5 (though I did ping the company above to see if they'd be interested in doing one) so I thought I'd check and see if any of you all had tried it.

I like the steering like it is, but I guess I'm just used to it (after a dozen or so c5 & c6 track/race cars). The summit reducer looks like an easy install, assuming they send couplers that you can fasten to the OEM shaft.

You can get columns on ebay pretty cheap, maybe get a spare shaft and try it out.

I'm with you on the hatred of the slow steering. I worry that adding more crap in the steering setup will numb the feel even further though.

I'd like something like that if I did more AutoX.

I use a 1.5:1 on our car - coleman pro-lite, much smaller and lighter (about 1.5 lbs) like this one.

Adapting one to fit is not trivial, but really helps the nimbleness. Steering effort goes up by about 30%.

How's your PS pump dealing with the extra load?

3 seasons so far without issue, Z51 cooler, but the car is lightened considerably (2500-2600lbs). Tires are large though (315/18).

Thanks for the input!!!

Any pics/tips for adapting it? My car is still full-weight, but no aero (your car appears to have significant aero) and I'll only be running 275-295 fronts on stock Z06 wheels. I also have a large, aftermarket PS cooler.

I just drove the WRX up one of our great local backroads here (Bear Creek Rd. in the Santa Cruz mnts for anybody that knows the area) and WOW what a great mod. Heading to/from Bear Creek there is definitely some slop from the gear box that is a bit noticeable on the freeway. But as soon as you're into the "fun stuff" you don't even begin to notice it. And being able to keep one hand position for this entire, super tight/twisty road (we're talkin' posted 10-15mph U-turns in some places) like an F1 car or something was amazing. It actually took some getting used to not repositioning my hands pre-turn. I really hope I can work out a good solution for my Z06.

Every rally car that I have seen has had some way of quicking things up. I'm pretty sure that you will like it for drifting and other pitched driving. My new ice race car will be sporting one too!!!

I'll have to read through the rules and see if I can run one in SM2, that would be pretty

what a cool toy. It looks like cutting and welding with some fab are involved. It anyone has a old C5 steering column around I would try to install it if someone wanted to try it. I got lots of cutters and welders. The ebay one looks a bit offset and that would improve the c5 steering position

There is no extra load on the power steering pump. This is a column mod before the rack. the extra load goes on your arms.

Man, after coming from racing BMW's the steering in my Corvette is horrible! It was like driving an 80's Lincoln or something. So loose and numb in comparison to other sports cars. Point being- I want this mod in the worst way!

Where in Cali? I have the necessary tools too and plan to track down an extra steering column and order one of those Coleman quickeners ASAP.
