I've been to the track 6 times now over the past 2 years, and I want to start having more accurate lap times. (Not really thinking my buddy using his I-Phone is going to be as accurate as a transponder) I just wanted to get some feedback on which transponder to get, or is there another option out there that I am not aware of... I go to the Autobahn in Joliet, IL, and Blackhawk near Rockford. Thanks for any input in advance.

Both of those options look compelling. I assume with the Infrared sensors that you have to have the sending unit in the paddock close to the track pointed in the appropriate direction. Obviously then the transmitter in your car would be mounted pointed at the sending unit? Is my simple logic correct? MMMMM, things to consider for Christmas. I did come across the IR system in my research. Anyone have 1st hand experience with it or that other system? Should I just go with the most common transponder? (I assume it is the AMB TranX260?) Is this one a high quality unit?
Yeah after about 12 track days I decided it would be fun to time my laps and set goals for myself trying to improve my driving, dial in my car, and ultimately go faster. I decided on a Performance Box by Racelogic because it is plug and play and it provides more data than I will ever need (I sound like an infomercial ). Here's a sample layout from Thunderhill Raceway of speed and lateral g's vs. time around the track. It uses GPS and accelerometers and simply sticks to your windshield and plugs into the cigarette lighter. Shows lap times clearly while you are driving. Here's a link:
Not all clubs will pay the track to turn on the timing loop and publish times. Collecting and publishing times makes it hard to sell it as a "drivers education" event and the timed nature can cause problems for insurance...
I've used a HotLap in the past, but all the data of a real data acquisition system is pretty compelling and will help you see exactly what you're doing or not doing on the track.
^^ this. It's fully self-contained and has speed/g-force logging too.
A couple of guys I know wrote some software to overlay the performancebox log data on top of a video clip too. eg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWrKMU5Q9Vw - I dunno if they're still working on it though - it was a weekend hack.
That VBOX by Racelogic is definitely a purchase I will make in the future! That is pretty awesome, g's vs. mph, lap times, hp calculator,... But for now, I think I will contact that guy offering the to sell that Longacre system for cheap. (I am planning on getting a lift in the spring and have to control my ob$e$$ion for $peed) I al$o need new tire$.
