Basically, you cram a screwdriver up into the plastic ring around the shaft, and yank on it until it rips off. I've yet to get one off without mangling the plastic bushing up. You are supposed to replace the larger ring anyway though. Even after removing and reinstalling several, it is still a major PITA!
