Heading back to CMP soon and wondering how other experienced drivers run corners 3 to 4 and 13 to 14 in relation to shifting. I am running a stock geared C5 Z06 with head and cam motor on track tires (bout 430 RWHP). When I exit 3 i am full throttle then find I need to lift because I am very close to redline. If I shift near the red line I find that I have just completed the shift and need to get on the brakes heal toe and back to the gear i just left did not get much use out of the shift if any at all ..... Same problem with 13 to 14..... Just looking for advice on what you guys do ...
thanks for the input .... will play with it a bit ... on one hand want to be fast but other need to be safe not upset car or beat the tar out of the motor .... :-)
Well you have a point lol but ... point is dont want to wreck it if possible keeping her in line is a good thing .... and my budget does not have enough funds to put a new motor in yet. Bumping the rev limiter on this thing from what I read is not a good thing consistently... She has 62K on her 8-9K of which is from the road course :-)
Are you racing, time trialing, looking for "flyer" lap, or just lapping?
If any of the first three, then hold it in 3rd at all the locations. If just lapping, short shift to 4th and stick your foot back in it.
I do both, depending on the situation. And I do both while time trialing. It all depends on how well I got out of the previous corner. If I am on a steamroller, then I might have to shift to 4th or risk bumping the rev limiter for longer than I like. If I came out of it so-so, then I will just stay in third.
Some of it will depend on which tires you are running... and that will determine my point above on how well you came out of the turn.

Wow--almost double the track miles I have in 3 yrs! I just realized at my last event per instructor comment that yeah, to go faster you are going to have to be willing to run it near redline in 3rd for a while. I had not been even thinking of that since before the oil cooler it would have super heated the oil fast. I just naturally shift as the needle approaches 6 like on the street. If you're trying for a fast lap then you have to throw that habit away and stay in the lower gear as much as possible.

My LS1 made 123,000 with maybe 60,000 on track before it ventilated the block. Your actual mileage may vary.
Speaking of Mr. GoGoGo, here's an oldie but goodie of the younger England at CMP ready to get out on front on a cold day... Watch the blue Z in front of the black one on the out lap...
I think staying in third works out better for most of us. If you go to 4th between 3 and 4, another option is to stay in fourth through turn 4 and grab 3rd going into turn 5. Kevin and I run with a guy that does that and he is faster thru there than we are (and that is the only place he is faster than Kevin).
