Not sure what engine you use but you may want to read John's reply, just above yours if you haven't already..

Here is it ==> Mobil 1 0W-30, 0W-50 and 15W-50

That's what happens at the local Walmart here in north FL. I'll go to Wally World on the way home and check. I've got three jugs in the garage but if availability is going to be a problem I'll buy whatever they have.

I guess eventually we'll all have to switch to the 0-50w but where do you get it? I can't afford to order a 55 gallon drum.

From the M1 website:

Where can I buy the Mobil 1 Racing oils? And in what size containers?

Mobil 1 Racing oils are available to buy online at the Mobil 1 Racing Store. Package sizes include quarts (6 quarts per case) as well as 55-gallon drums and full pallets for race teams and small businesses

Hey guys, you may want consider this Rebate Deal from Mobil 1
http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...ring_2011.aspx
it has to be a participating store, but $12.00 off could be a pretty good deal. JD

John and Everyone,

Just to elaborate a little, and without getting into the specific chemestry, up until a couple of years ago, the Mobil 1 15w50 had significantly more anti-wear properties, and was formulated for high output motors. Most of the Porsche guys, from autocrossers, to HPDE fellows, to real racers, would use nothing else.

Then, things changed. Some government organization, perhaps the EPA (I can not recall right now), mandated new requirements, like emissions requirements, but that effected motor oils. And Mobil, quietly, so as not to upset this very lucrative high performance market they had developed, changed their additives and proportions, to comply with the new government standards - but, Q U I E T L Y. They did not tell us!

But, some Porsche people, and probably some Corvette people, too, were paying attention. This became a major issue in the racing community, and as much because Mobil had obviously attempted to hide the changes, as because of the detrimental formulation changes themselves. Today, most Porsche racers are using everything BUT Mobil 1.

Responding to this huge exodus from their brand, Mobil has obviously scrambled to reproduce their old formulation (or similar), and has, of necessity, rebranded it as a "racing only" product - 0w30 or 0w50.

In short, the off-the-shelf 15w50 that we purchased for years no longer has the supreme lubricity and anti-wear qualities. Today, it is a different oil entirely.

I remember reading a while back about Mobil dropping the Zinc content.

I think I'll just switch to Redline.

15W-50 Mobil 1..........I like the $24.50 5-quart jug price at Wally world but more the 1,300 ppm Zinc (Zn) and 1200 ppm Phosphorus (P) content that are for the needed anti-wear protection to critical engine parts, such as piston/cylinder walls, roller cams under heavy valve spring pressure and especially those that employ a solid “flat tappet” type system.
I drive ALL my vehicles hard and they haven't let me down so the current PPM above are very high compared to the other off the shelfs/price per quart

It also comes down to how often you dump your oil. I know some guys doing it at every event or two.

Jody,

We like Redline products a lot, and have used their synthetic gear oil in our transaxles for years. We use only their 50 weight (which is actually a multi-viscosity 15w50) in our Cobra. They make superior products.

You probably already know this, but Redline, too, has their product lines split into Racing, and "Other", probably for the same reasons as Mobil. If you are looking for their highest performance oils, look to the Racing product line.

I don't like the overly increased oil pressure and the temp increase I see from the 50 wt oil. More pressure from the thicker oil doesn't always equate to more/better lubrication as oil flow is an important factor.

I run Amsoil 10w40 (it has higher levels of ZDDP etc. etc.) and I cange it after every 3 track weekends. Shoot... probably no need to change the oil since my '01 burns about a quart every trackday... thus 3 track weekends = about 6 fresh quarts

Some thoughts for consideration.

The Mobil 1 0w50 is a racing oil that will not have the proper detergents and dispersants for a dual use car. For a track day only car, that is not an issue. It has very high levels of ZDDP (zinc 1850 ppm, phosphorus 1750 ppm). But, it appears to use a pretty good dose of viscosity improvers to get the large spread in viscosity (0w to 50). As a result, it's High Temp High Shear rating is pretty low at 4.1 cSt. As a comparison, AMSOIL's racing 15w50 is 5.4.

The oil mentioned above by Travisnd:
AMSOIL SAE Synthetic Premium Protection 10w40 (Product Code AMOQT)
(zinc – 1378 ppm, phosphorus 1265 ppm)

... is a good compromise for a dual use car, (but there are others including Red Line). This oil has much higher ZDDP than allowed by the API for a 30 grade oil (800 ppm phosphorus limit), the proper detergents and dispersants needed for the street, and it has a High Temp High Shear rating of 4.3.

Which oil do you recommend for a dual purpose car that is 90% track use, the 10w-40 or the racing 15w-50 and what is the difference. Is your 10w-40 as good or better than M1 15w-50 Walmart stuff. My car sees 12 to 15 track days a year and less than 500 street miles. From what I can tell M1 is going to be vary expensive if Walmart is dropping it. I could not find any online at a good price? JD

My car is a full-time track car, but I prefer the 10w40.... not a fan of the increased temps and even higher pressure I've seen with a 50 wt oil. Are you saying I should run the 15w50 vs. the 10w40?

Advance Auto Parts has a 5-qt Mobile 1 oil change kit w/ filter on sale for $32.99 and that includes 15W-50 M1 oil, or any other weight of your choice. I just bought 3 kits. Sale ends 3/30/2011. My local Wallyworld did not have any 15W-50.

FWIW Corvette racing switched from M1 racing 0-30W to 0-50W and gained 4 hp. However, they do not start the engine until they warm the oil to 230 deg. and change oil every race. the 0-30W racing is said to be excellent for a normal C5/C6 track car.
