C5 Carbon Fiber Hood
Black Dog Speed Shop just mounted their new Carbon Fiber C5 HOOD on my 1999 FRC Race-Car.
I haven't pulled the trigger just yet, and would like some forum input:
Aesthetics?
Downforce?
Cooling?
What else to consider?
I will have to change the vinyl graphics to go with the new look, but that's the easy part.
Before you ask: $ 2,850.00, and it's a bolt on to the factory mount.

That's sweet looking!
For best cooling make sure the shroud is tight all the way to the air inlet at the splitter. But I'm sure Black Dog has already done that.

Flipping the radiator (not sure if there is enough room to clear the stock hood mounts on the hood where the upper radiator hose attaches) and like Jody said get all of the air that comes in the front sealed tight to the radiator and as much of that air as possible out through the hood vents will help downforce. This will also help cooling some.

Is it me or does the trailing corners of the hood stick up, or is it just not latched? It looks really nice and it looks like it fits tight with very little gap but wow at 2850.. Just another item I like but cant afford

It looks great! How big is that weave??

looks great, basically copied the World Challenge hood everyone else copied, which was NOT an ACP design for once.
That weave is difference, more perpendicular than most, but I like it. Will help cooling, aero, and yes looks!

That's big coin but a very nice looking hood. However, a prominent vendor sells a vented replica for under 800. Even if you had to mod it, it would be way, way less. *shrug* race cars are not about practical though... If you like it, buy it!

Fit and finish are perfect. Black Dog spent a tremendous amount if time getting the product right, and now they are prepared for public sale.

In the end, you usually get what you pay for. My experience with Black Dog Speed Shop is that you usually get more!

I can't imagine paying neary $3000 for a hood. When you bang the car up that's just that much more money you have to spend to fix it. I'll stick with the stock hook with some carbon fiber vents installed. $250 off the forums vs. $3000... just my $0.02

But what kind of wax would you put on it?

Don, my WC hood added some good down force and oil tremps went down 15-20 degrees on 100 degree days. I think you will love it and it removes front weight. You will probably need a little more bite in the wing/spoiler! I like the way it looks.

I love the look and fit and finish from what I can see. The important thing is do you like it, if you do then go for it. Everyone customizes their cars in different ways. I probably spent too much $ to custom paint my new Bell Racing helmet, but it was something I wanted and I like how it looks vs. plain white.
Some people spend thousands on leather interior upgrades, some on Chrome and engine bay dressing. So if this is your way to customize your race car then go for it.
