New York — General Motors Co. pulled off a surprise Wednesday at the New York International Auto Show by rolling out a new version of the legendary Camaro Z/28 after a decade's absence
GM North America President Mark Reuss was all smiles as the white muscle car with black rear spoiler was driven on stage to applause and cheers from automotive journalists.
"This is for all of us who want a Camaro that's absolutely built for the track," Reuss said. "Dubbed code-word 'HP' inside of GM, this is something we have longed to do and now we have done it."
Reuss said GM will begin building the Z/28 this fall for testing. It's expected to generate about 500 horsepower and get 470 foot-pounds of torque.
Pricing isn't available yet, but it will be the most expensive Camaro offered, Reuss said. Production likely will be somewhat limited, but Reuss said, "We'll make as many as people want."
The new Z/28 shows GM is healthy financially and is able to again make cars like this.
"This won't be the highest-volume car we do obviously," Reuss told reporters after the reveal. "But these kind of cars, you have to be able to be a car company that can do a few of these here and there to make sure everybody knows what this brand is, and that it's alive and well. This is the kind of stuff ... it gets everybody crazy excited."
In lap testing done so far, the Camaro Z/28 is three seconds faster than the Camaro ZL1, Reuss said.
Reuss said GM built a mule Camaro Z/28 about two years ago at the Milford Proving Grounds.
"I took my boss for a ride in the car and I said, 'We want this car badly,'" he said referring to GM CEO Dan Akerson.
TheZ/28 could serve as a halo vehicle for Chevrolet and aid Camaro sales, as buyers drawn to look at the Z/28 less expensive Camaro instead, said Alec Gutierrez, senior analyst for Kelley Blue Book. "It definitely shows good things for the brand," Gutierrez said.
GM, which just a few years ago had to delay some product plans during its financial crisis, said it is now able to make a car like this.
GM was able to shave about 200 pounds by removing things like trunk carpeting and some speakers. It retains its high-revving ability and the V-8 power through GM's 7-liter LS7 engine.
The first Camaro Z/28 was introduced in 1967 but went away in 2002.
Chevy also showed off its refreshed 2014 Camaro SS, which will hit dealerships this fall after its first major redesign since its intro as a concept in 2006. It features a refreshed exterior that appears wider, with aerodynamic tweaks.
Chevy also showed the 2014 SS rear-wheel drive performance sedan and the 2014 Corvette Stingray convertible. The Stingray convertible debuted this month in Geneva.

For what little it may be worth: Mark Stielow was involved in the development of the Z/28. Given that, it'll be more than capable for what it is. He has a proven track (literally) record.

I think it's an awesome car and I'm glad Chevy can make it. Though for the track guy, I'm thinking a heavily discounted new C6 Z06 is the way to go unless you just have to have the Z28 for whatever reason.

Price level I saw on another site says "Low 60's". If only they had made that car 7/8 scale and 700 lbs lighter than what it is now. That combination would be something I would be interested in purchasing !

How did you do your estimations? With the carbon ceramic brakes, LS7 engine (which cost more to produce than the LSA), and all the other goodies, I bet it will cost a fair bit more than the ZL1, i.e. in the low 60's as a base price with very few options (like the optional air conditioning).

I used the cost of a crate LS7 vs LS3 and the cost of the Z07 option on a Z06 to add the brake package. I've been talking to more people and they seem to think my estimation is low. As incredible as this car is, at $60k I don't see a market for it. Not when you can get a Grand Sport with 70 hp less but 700lbs lighter. If you're looking for an off-the-shelf track car, the GS is the one.

That is EXACTLY what I'm hoping GM does for us Vette guys. Offer us a true track package C7 base, Z06, and/or ZR1. Very similiar to a GT3 RS offering Porsche does for their customers. Rest assured I will trade in my C6 ZR1 for one if it delivers.

Just spent the day riding a Laguna Seca Mustang at Autobahn CC and a base model mustang .
The Laguna was 54 K and did 1/2 hour sessions with ease .
That Camaro has its work cut out ...

Sure thanks to a government bailout and NEVER having to repay the loan. How about props for Ford who is doing the same thing and took NOTHING from the government. Us taxpayers have paid for GM's "success" and we will never see a return on our investment. GM should have had to file reconstructive bankruptcy just like every other company. I love my Corvette but am not proud it is made by GM.
