Default Not sure I want to know

Changed oil last night in race car and I use a re-usable oil filter. When I inspected the screen I noticed some aluminum flakes about the size of finely ground pepper. Major problem or normal for a race car ????

You should send an oil sample to Blackstone Laboratories for analysis. It only costs $25 and they can tell you exactly what's going on inside your motor. Consider that on your next oil change for peace of mind.

Reusable oil filter?

That sounds like as good an idea as a reusable condom.

Total billet aluminum and the screen size filters out much smaller particles than a paper filter. Saves the mess of cutting paper filter apart to see what is inside.

Been running one for years on the Duramax and the LS6, John. A few flakes may not be indicative of an impending failure but you don't won't to see flakes every change. I also use a strainer to catch my oil when draining in case there are large objects floating around. I found a small roller pin on one occasion (LT4), a metal sprocket tooth on another (380 SL) and a connecting rod bolt cotter pin (actually, two) on my airplane engine. The mere thought of changing my oil can cause me great anxiety.

Pretty common in the race world, especially drag racing where we change the oil and check the filter multiple times per race. We use a System 1 pass-through style.
