Autocrossing with Rivals

IIRC the most economical option I had come up with was to run regular C5 (non-Z06) rears on the front at 18x9.5 with 275's plus your stock Z06 rears with 295's, but I have not actually done it.

The only time my car has gone into ice mode with ABS is when I run a smaller rear tire than front. I've never seen ice mode engage with a square setup or a setup with a smaller diameter front than rear tire.
The 295 is also not specified for a 9.5" rim. I know people have done that on Hoosiers, but those tend to run small for the size on the sidewall. I have no idea if the Rivals run small, but if not, they would not work well on an undersized rim.

and the only reason I suggested previously that the 315 rear might work. The 295 front is out IMO because of the height. I guess you could run 295 square but the last thing you need is more front grip relative to the rear with street tires. Assuming the 295 actually had more grip on a 9.5 inch rim which it may not.

I'm curious to see where this goes.....
There WAS 2 drivers registered for Dixie in "SS" in an Elise, but they've since backed out.
SSR is currently up to 15.
Is a 295 street tire rubbing the rear of the fender liner? I've never had any rubbing with my 295 A6s up front.

Melting Slicks
I ran 295/17 A6's on stock front wheels with 1/4 spacers and that was a bit much and it rubbed on the inner lip up front of a C5Z that was lowered almost all the way up front.. I took the spacers off and it didn't rub...

But also rubbing can depend on your alignment. You can move the whole front wheel in an out and forward and backward in the wheel well when changing the alignment.
I'll be running Rivals this year on a C6 grand sport. I used them a bit last year and I really like them. They are far less finicky over temperature vs. an A6. They also seem more forgiving around the peak grip slip angle vs. an A6. Should be fun.

For a lighter, low cost option, what about getting a C5Z rear 18" x 10.5" narrowed to 9.5"? I know of people getting C5Z wheel widened, can you you get them narrowed?

Sadly I will have to amend my previous post. I had been patiently waiting for the 335/30/18 rival to be back in stock again to use as my rears on my grand sport. Even bought custom 18" stock width/offset wheels to use them on. Tirerack listed they were due in less than 2 weeks- on 3/30, and had that due date listed since January when I first started looking at possible street tires for the car in stock class. As of a few days ago it seems that BFG has decided to push that delivery way out till June.
Seems like a great way alienate customers and of course, who's to say if that new date means anything even. I contacted BFG and they can't tell me if that date has any meaning
Moral of the story, if the rivals you use are ever on backorder don't plan on getting them at any specific time.
The thing I can't understand is, I know these are a low volume tire, but why bother spending the big bucks on the tooling for a given size if you are not going to put it to use?? Especially when there are people who could use the tire!
With the stock class going to street tires, that has got to open up some demand for these niche tires. I can't wait till someone like Dunlup realizes that there is an unfilled need in wider sizes.

Not quite the same, but that happened last year for the introduction of the 315 and 335 Rival. They were originally slated to be out in April I think. Finally made it shortly before Nationals.

Safety Car
My brother ran the Rivals on his 02 Z last year and his tires started to come apart. Chunks of rubber were missing by the end of the season. And he only ran one local region. Didn't even drive them much on the street.
I know that the rivals are better than pretty much anything out there right now for UTG 200 and above. But do we really need to sacrifice quality?
Someone at Kumho needs to push the UTG rating of the XS to 200.

They may have changed something to address the quality, I remember reading about some people having quality issues with them when they first were available. I purchased a set of 255 17" for my wrx in late June and used them for many events and they have had no issues yet. Maybe I was just lucky though.

I was trying to get a look at what the AS & BS guys were running last weekend @ Dixie, but AS ran the same heat as us and I just never got over.

That is interesting, so based on that, maybe the 335's will be in stock again at the end of the summer Them coming out at the end of the summer last year would make it hard to have much demand for them. Perhaps that's why they don't seem interested in making more.

I made a mistake and ran a bit too low pressure to hope for more front end grip but ended up messing up the turn in respond and transition.
We didn't take advantage of the +/- 1" rule so I'm stuck with 255 width front at this moment. It's definitely not sufficient for this car. Once we switch to 18" front, 275/295 combo might work well.
I wonder why most tire manufacture stop at 255 section width for 17" tires

Pulled the trigger on the 275/295 Rivals from TireRack today. Sounds like a good balanced setup. Would be nice to go wider on both ends but you gotta work with what's out there I guess. Went with 18" repro front wheels.
These will go on my new to me '03 C5Z, stock shocks and bars. This car is my temporary retirement from FP for a few years so I'm not super serious but of course I hope to be competitive. I have a couple of trophies from Nats in FP so I'm about an upper mid-packer at best, will be interesting to see how I adjust to a bigger, more powerful car on street tires!

I know this is an "Autocrossing with Rivals" thread but it looks like the Hankook RS-3 could be an option in AStreet if you go +1 on both the front and the rear of the Z06. 275/35-18 front and 305/30-19 rear. Gives you about a half inch extra tread width on the rear tires...
