Default Wilwood W6A kit torque specs

I'm usually not one to question a manufacturer's torque specs, but here is what I am facing.

The kit was installed on a 99 C5. The instructions call for the caliper bracket bolts, which are the OE bolts, to be torqued to 65lbs with locktite. The OE spec is 125lbs.

The caliper mounting nuts which are 1/2" 12 point are to be torqued to 85 INCH POUNDS with locktite, which is about 7 ft/lbs.

Given my past experience with brake upgrades and ear mounting torque values, I'm just not comfortable with these numbers. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks in advance.

Marc

I believe the caliper mounting nuts are 47 lb-ft.

85 in-lb sounds more like what I would expect for the rotor ring to hat torque spec.

Okay, so looking at the new version of the W6A BBK which uses the Aerolite calipers and the same mounting set up the torque spec for the adapter mounting bolts is 65lbs, and caliper mounting nuts is 47lbs.

The torque spec for the rotor ring is, and of course you are right, 85in.

I can not believe that a company like Wilwood would publish instructions with a typo of that magnitude.

I'm still not happy with the 65lbs, but at least that figure is consistent on both sets of instructions.

The mounting ears on the stock calipers have threaded steel inserts. The threads in the Wilwood caliper brackets are threaded directly into the aluminum. Use the lower Wilwood torque spec, for sure!

here are the instructions for the Wilwoods I have. Different kit than yours, caliper 140-8230

"Once all clearances have been checked, remove the wheel, caliper, hat, and rotor from the spindle and hub. Secure the caliper
mounting bracket (1) to the spindle using red Loctite® 271. Torque the bolts to 65 ft-lbs. Reinstall the hat and rotor assembly
and again use several lug nuts to hold it in place. Lubricate caliper mounting studs and nuts with lightweight oil, reinstall the caliper,
torque the caliper nuts (8) to 28 ft-lbs. "

Can't explain the difference between one kit's 28 ft-lbs and the 47 in another

You should call them and confirm. I called them a couple of times with questions and got knowledgeable tech who knew the answer right away

No sure what papers are being reviewed but the 140-10163 kit states:

Hat bolts 155 in-lbs

Bracket to knuckle 65ft lbs
* (as an M14 bolt I think I'd be higher here as well- I'd personally have listed this more in line with 115-125 as I do my M14 truck kits)

Cap nuts 47ft lbs

PDF INSTALL LINK

*** I can however CLEARLY state the reason for one being 28lbs and the other 47lbs. The 8230 kit is not a 7/6-20 stud, it's a 3/8-24 thread. (my spec 32lbs) Totally different animal here. Sharing info is fine but be sure you're looking at the same application.

Hope that helps....

Todd is right, good observation

Mine is a 3/8" stud.

That's why I gave the PN so Marc could see if we have apples-to-oranges or not

Gentlemen,

Thank you the info and confirmation of the correct torque specs.

Just so you know, the PDF file that I attached above came straight from the Wilwood Help section on their web page.

Everything is good now.

I've always used medium strength blue thread locker (not the high strength red stuff, which can make it very hard to get the bolts out) and 65 ft-lbs torque on mine and have never had one come loose. The original thread locking compound on the factory bolts appears to be medium strength.
