I have a well preserved low miles C5 z06. The only "mods" are a fluidamper 6% underdrive balancer, lowered, Corsa Extreme axleback, K&N air filter, and lighter seats. On the straights cars with far more horsepower like a newer Shelby GT500 pull away so slowly that I think with headers and a tune I'd pace them, or better. Even the mighty C6 Z06's don't pull away all that fast--maybe a few car lengths on the back straight at Pocono Southeast option. At the Glen, they get farther ahead, but I'm just baffled at the performance of the little C5 Z06, and would have thought that they fall back dramatically on straights. As a package, the old C5Z performs amazingly well.

I have always been impressed with C5Zs, even stock out the box, and they look great too. C5Zs were made back when GM were building cars with a purpose...Unlike today with superchargers, automatics, removable roofs.

A well driven, STOCK C5 Z06 is a formidable track weapon. However, for serious track usage, it needs some upgrades in the cooling, seat and brake category. It is quite quick for 4 or 5 laps with only tires, pads and the driver mod

I used to think the same thing, after upgrading from the Header/Tune but otherwise stock LS6 to a lingenfelter LS7 and comparing datalogs down the back straight of Gingerman it was eye opening how little time you actually gain with more HP. To be sure, you do gain some time and if your racing at the bleeding edge it no doubt is required. But It's not the massive gain I expected it would be on a single straight given how much harder the car pulls.

I agree that the little C5Z can really embarrass a lot of factory performance cars on the track. However, when you put a hefty person in the right seat of a stock C5Z you can really feel the car slowing down. That is where a few HP improvements really pay off.
