Compared to a c5z, they blow up regularly, the brakes will kill you, and they handle like ****. Plus, the windows and door handles are always ****ing up and you cant control the starter. The abs is ridiculously intrusive.
It is crystal clear that a hell of a design team built and tuned the c5z, within gm's constraints....and equally clear that a passle of show car idiots and cousin - deal parts sourcing went into the c6z design team.
Basically to make a great track car with a c5z just add power and cooling and brakes if you want longevity. More tire if you want.
To make a great track car out of a c6z, you must replace the entire braking system entirely, rewire the whole car, completely replace the oiling system and valve guides, re design the rear cradle suspension pickup points, and add power and cooling. And figure out how to cage it. Then it needs shocks, bars, etc., and lots of tweaking to get it to handle.
I have 113k, about half on track, 2006 C6 Z. Taught many GM people to drive on track including the BGAP assistant plant Mgr, Nora Roper. Just prepped it for 11th year of track.
put the same power and tires on a c5z and you'd be doing better!
C5 Z06 also has its track car issues. Bottom feeder that must be changed to run a splitter, no dry sump, tranny and diff heat issues need coolers, aero not as good as a C6, etc. Both are capable street cars, but both need significant changes to be a race car.
