Default SCCA explained?

I've only done HPDE events.

Was looking at SCCA website, and it seems to be for actual racing..which to me means you're on your own..no one is there to help keep the event safe and your car could get damaged.

Maybe I didn't look hard enough though. Can someone give me some more info on what SCCA is all about? I'm interested only because someone at an event told me about it and said there were loads of cars when SCCA shows up at an event. Seemed fun to at least come watch, but not sure if I could (would want) to participate or not.

I'm an SCCA racer.

SCCA has some time trial, some intro, regional racing, national racing, pro racing.

I'm a national racer in their "Majors" series. SCCA has regional conferences like the Western (self explanatory). In it are smaller regions like sopac and san francisco. You can race locally just in sopac sticking to tracks BRP, WSIR, ACS and win a regional championship. You can branch out in the Western Conference and race anywhere in it like Laguna seca and BRP and win a conference. You can take an occasional out of conference travel race and race watkins glen. You can spend your year racing all over the country if you have the budget. At the Season end there is a national championship runoffs where each class will crown a champion in a winner take all final race with the fastest guys in your class. To race the Runoffs you qualify by doing a number of races and gain minimum points.

SCCA Safety is the best there is. Medical chief signs off and approve the start of a weekend only after all medical systems are in place. Helicopter access is available and utilized. Ambulance and paramedics are on site and there is ACLS (advanced cardiac life support) trackside! There are minimun 2 flaggers per station one looking upstream and one looking down so action is not missed. SCCA has the nicest bunch of workers you will ever meet and pro races like the LBGP use our flaggers and communications and safety crews. SCCA owns its tow trucks and they have practiced extraction crews and fire crews. Others try to copy but none succeed as far as I can see.

I can tell you about an Indie motorsports park race where they flew a racer out with just a broken arm instead of delay the races. I could tell you about my friend who broke like 11 bones hitting the wall at Daytona who got expert extraction and treatment. But the bottom line is SCCA is the best I have experienced.

Did you look at their PDX program? That's their equivalent of HPDE.

We have Road racing (Club and Pro think TransAm), PDX, Time Trials and autocrossing. We also do rally crossing- autocrossing off-road as well as road rallys.

I've been a member and competitor since 1984. I've done everything but rally cross. I've been a race official since 1985. I've worked 100s of club events as well as Pro Trans-Am, Indy, IMSA, F-1, AMA, WERA, and World Karting. I'm a former licensed competitor and currently a Time Trials instructor and Safety Steward.
The wife and I are working a hill climb in North Carolina next month.

If you are in the Dallas area, I happen to be the head of Club Trials and PDX for the region. PDX is the SCCA version of HPDE. We just had an event a week ago at Motorsports ranch at Cresson, and are working hard to get track space for 3 more events this year. please go to our texasscca.org site, and watch our schedule, or feel free to IM me anytime.

One of my favorite groups to run with is the Washington, D.C. Scca group. Great events and great attitudes. I have done two years of pdx and plan to try out a time trial before the year is done

Sorry, dont want to high jack this thread but my question falls in line.

I am looking to get into SCCA racing. I have been doing HPDE to learn the tracks and the car.
I really want to race at some point.

Is there anyone on here involved in SCCA in southern Colorado that I could meet up with at a track or just chat with to get more info.

I suggest you look up Mike Pettiford of Go For It driving school. He is an avid SCCA racer and quite fast and accomplished.

Not only is Petiford a nice guy but can rent a racecar to do things like try out racing or do the SCCA super school to get your provisional license.

A 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th) for Mike! We were in the same race group this past weekend at Pueblo. He can DRIVE! Quite the gentleman, as well.

BTW - you just missed the SCCA Majors race weekend at Pueblo Motorsports Park - would have been a *perfect* weekend to come out, see what it is about, etc. I tend to stay offline when we are heading to/at the races. We hit the road last Tuesday...did not see your post until today.

All of the others have pretty much addressed your questions/concerns...

....remember when "hisvett" and I said YOU NEED TO COME OUT TO ECR!?!?!?! Well....this is why....LOL!

I'm on the board of the Texas Region of SCCA (the local/DFW chapter) and race in the SCCA Majors (National tour) in GT-2. I have a get together usually once a week when I'm in town called "Racecars n Cigars" that includes a mix of track rats, HPDE instructors, racers, car nuts, etc...you need to come out and we can chat. I live in Grapevine. I can, hopefully, answer any/all questions you may have - or at least point you in the right direction, or other in attendance can give you guidance.

BTW - will be in town next Tuesday (June 7)...so, consider this your invite!
