SCCA explained?

Was looking at SCCA website, and it seems to be for actual racing..which to me means you're on your own..no one is there to help keep the event safe and your car could get damaged.
Maybe I didn't look hard enough though. Can someone give me some more info on what SCCA is all about? I'm interested only because someone at an event told me about it and said there were loads of cars when SCCA shows up at an event. Seemed fun to at least come watch, but not sure if I could (would want) to participate or not.

SCCA has some time trial, some intro, regional racing, national racing, pro racing.
I'm a national racer in their "Majors" series. SCCA has regional conferences like the Western (self explanatory). In it are smaller regions like sopac and san francisco. You can race locally just in sopac sticking to tracks BRP, WSIR, ACS and win a regional championship. You can branch out in the Western Conference and race anywhere in it like Laguna seca and BRP and win a conference. You can take an occasional out of conference travel race and race watkins glen. You can spend your year racing all over the country if you have the budget. At the Season end there is a national championship runoffs where each class will crown a champion in a winner take all final race with the fastest guys in your class. To race the Runoffs you qualify by doing a number of races and gain minimum points.
SCCA Safety is the best there is. Medical chief signs off and approve the start of a weekend only after all medical systems are in place. Helicopter access is available and utilized. Ambulance and paramedics are on site and there is ACLS (advanced cardiac life support) trackside! There are minimun 2 flaggers per station one looking upstream and one looking down so action is not missed. SCCA has the nicest bunch of workers you will ever meet and pro races like the LBGP use our flaggers and communications and safety crews. SCCA owns its tow trucks and they have practiced extraction crews and fire crews. Others try to copy but none succeed as far as I can see.
I can tell you about an Indie motorsports park race where they flew a racer out with just a broken arm instead of delay the races. I could tell you about my friend who broke like 11 bones hitting the wall at Daytona who got expert extraction and treatment. But the bottom line is SCCA is the best I have experienced.
It shows you in Dallas, poke around http://www.texasscca.org/
Check out their Solo and PDX areas.
I've been a member and competitor since 1984. I've done everything but rally cross. I've been a race official since 1985. I've worked 100s of club events as well as Pro Trans-Am, Indy, IMSA, F-1, AMA, WERA, and World Karting. I'm a former licensed competitor and currently a Time Trials instructor and Safety Steward.
The wife and I are working a hill climb in North Carolina next month.

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
I am looking to get into SCCA racing. I have been doing HPDE to learn the tracks and the car.
I really want to race at some point.
Is there anyone on here involved in SCCA in southern Colorado that I could meet up with at a track or just chat with to get more info.

BTW - you just missed the SCCA Majors race weekend at Pueblo Motorsports Park - would have been a *perfect* weekend to come out, see what it is about, etc. I tend to stay offline when we are heading to/at the races. We hit the road last Tuesday...did not see your post until today.

....remember when "hisvett" and I said YOU NEED TO COME OUT TO ECR!?!?!?! Well....this is why....LOL!
I'm on the board of the Texas Region of SCCA (the local/DFW chapter) and race in the SCCA Majors (National tour) in GT-2. I have a get together usually once a week when I'm in town called "Racecars n Cigars" that includes a mix of track rats, HPDE instructors, racers, car nuts, etc...you need to come out and we can chat. I live in Grapevine. I can, hopefully, answer any/all questions you may have - or at least point you in the right direction, or other in attendance can give you guidance.
BTW - will be in town next Tuesday (June 7)...so, consider this your invite!
