Man, that's a bummer, and WAY too young (only 5 years my senior). I expect the impact to F1 will not be fully appreciated until after a race or two. I think he was still race director for all the F1 events.

Have a good one (because you never know when we'll be called home),

Oh... I'm definitely shocked...

This season is going to be special in more ways than one. This is not a good start, special mood at Melbourne.

I have the impression that I have always known this Charlie on whom everything was based, protective angel for some, demon and executioner for others, he was already in F1 under Brabham with Bernie, that's when he became one of the key men of the Bernie system, pillar of safety and regulation, a page in the history of F1 is turning. A man I wonder who will replace him overnight in Melbourne....

Despite my reproaches about the consequences of Sutil's accident at Suzuka, Jules Bianchi, his job was anything but relaxing and easy, I had a deep respect.

Adieu Charlie, God is waiting you. RIP

Whiting might be pretty difficult to replace.
He was almost always right and didn't play favorites.

And for those listing top qualifiers: you guys need to stop smoking so much herb.
Ya all ain't even close...

Very high reactivity of the FIA.

Michael Masi, one of Charlie's 2 assistant race directors, is immediately appointed as the replacement. He will hold all three of Charlie's positions. Masi will later be replaced in the position he previously held, but the FIA has not yet communicated on this subject at this time. So the Australian GP can begin.

This was my impression as well. He seemed very well respected, even though most were probably not fans of his banning of things, he always seemed fair, and people seemed to respect him. RIP Charlie

And we'll all find out on Saturday. I have no idea, so I'm not even going to throw out a guess. My money is on Vettel for pole though.

Driver's thoughts from the Press Conference:

I finished up the Netflix series Drive to Survive last night.
Sainz says it has had a positive impact for him:

Grosjean OK with Steiner talking bad about him during the first half of 2018 in the film:

RIP Charlie. The cool head on the grid, pretty big shoes to fill.

That makes me smile! Thinking back to the Mansell/Prost/Senna years, when I'd get up at 4:30 to watch races from Europe, and hope they didn't preempt it for a high school badminton game.
I normally don't watch the practices, but it's on at a reasonable time, and I need a fix.

No conclusions yet, but lessons learned.

Lewis is still called Hamilton, surprise, for me, Le Clerc is very close to V4, 36 thousandths. The Honda works well, even at STR. Alfa is there but Renault P10 and P17, electronic issue for Hulk. Williams very far away. Ham V 26 laps, the 2 Féfé each 18, Bobo 29.

The first three don't let go. FP1 2019 faster than 2018.
