Default For those who have sent a steering rack to Turn One...

How did you box it and ship it? I went to a UPS store and they don't have any boxes long enough. They also quoted me $77 for ground shipping. Ouch. Can I ship it without a box? Also, what did you do to prevent fluid leakage? Thanks.

I made my own box using and folding flat cardboard sheets. Wrapped the rack with bed pads to catch liquids. Fed Ex ground charged about $50 to ship it.

the box was about 10x10x50 inches.

Did you remove the inner tie rods to get it down to 50"? Mine is looking like 56" long minimum with them attached.

You should remove the inner tie/outer rod ends. They won't need them to rebuild your rack and I think they charge to remove them. Go to Home Depot and buy a wardrobe box and a roll of bubble wrap. Bag the rack with a trash bag, wrap with 2-3" of bubble wrap, and like Nest wrote, cut the wardrobe box into a sheet and roll the sheet around the box. As for shipping, go onto FedEx.com and open an account. The shipping will be far less than the marked up shipping from the UPS or FedEx store.

I removed only the outer tie rod ends.

Box might have been a little more than 50 inches long. I don’t recall exact length.

Yeah, I removed the inners last night and its down to 30 some odd inches long. Those suckers were on so tight it felt like I could be damaging the rack breaking them loose.

ZIP has rebuilt racks also, and theirs are in stock for C5's usually. You can order one, then send your core later

As David said, just use their box to ship core to them.

Turn One doesn't work that way. They rebuild my rack and ship it back to me. I prefer this to getting someone else's rack. I know mine is tight, it just leaks.

They must be getting behind in inventory. David has a shop that has swapped out many racks I am sure.

Unrelated to shipping ... if you are sending to Turn One for a performance improvement, be sure to convince them that this is for a track car; they will remove a damper in the rack that improves feel through the steering wheel. It is quite noticeable and an improvement in my opinion. Since changing it out in my car, I have driven student cars with the stock rack and they feel quite dead.

I've never heard of this. Does it apply to C5s?

I have a C5Z, so I can only speak to that vehicle.
