Thanks everyone for the impute.

It is my right foot getting operated on so no pedals for me. A steering wheel sounds worthwhile. Pedals will come later after I heal up if I am still playing instead of real driving.

Lots of great information folks.

Check out a few YouTube videos there are lots of gear reviews. Fanatech makes good stuff for a good price. Make sure you get a load cell brake pedal.

If you have some wood fabrication skills, a driving rig doesn't have to cost thousands of dollars.
I made this for the kids from plywood and a cheap seat from Summit Racing.
I put some base vibrating speakers under the seat and floor and it shakes like crazy to the engine sounds.
Adds a lot to the experience for them.

my setup. i know it doesnt help you as your wanting Console
but i can tell you the sim seat time is a HUGE asset to that transfers to real life track time.

Ha, I just showed these pictures to my wife yesterday pointing out that my plans are so much more reasonable because they'll only be 2/3 that size!

I have been a Gran Turismo fan for years, GT Sport is a good game. I believe Assetto Corsa and iRacing are the most realistic models for driving, but AC's graphics are not what GTS is. I also play PCars 1/2 often. I've never played Forza since i am a Playstation guy.

Really it comes down to wanting to run more tracks for me, and some games have a great selection and some don't.

I have a Playseat Challenge with a Logitech G27 wheel that I play on. Its night and day compared to the controller stuff I'd always played with, so much more fun that I don't really get tired of playing anymore.

I'm really happy with the 80/20 rig I built. I bought all the stuff from Grainger. Use 4' sticks on the bottom, I used longer ones but I'm 6'3" and it was an expensive mistake. In the picture my seat is all the way forward and as you can see my pedals are moved way back. I think it cost about $500 in materials excluding the seat.

I've got a full motion sim, the SimCraft...it's AMAZING...I use it as a learning tool with iRacing as the software - I do very little racing with it - it's usually just me on there learning the track, watching the replays, different angles/views, comparing it with videos, coaching notes/instruction, etc...it helped at Homestead and Sebring a few weeks ago - sure, the ultimate is REAL track time but a sim is quite a learning tool - my best example is when I raced the SCCA Super Tour at COTA a few years ago - there was NOT a test day - there was ONE 25 minute test session and then ONE qual session on Friday. 2nd qual was Saturday along with Race 1 and then Race 2 on Sunday. I spent around 40 hours on the SimCraft with a buddy of mine coaching from his sim - WHAT A DIFFERENCE THAT MAKES!! So, my first time on track, it's a light mist/drizzle...oh joy...a LOT of blind corners at COTA...well, I was IMMEDIATELY comfortable, as in, the first lap was spot on! It was *very* evident that some folks didn't even start picking up the nuances of the track until the end of the race on Sunday...

I know the OP is looking for a console...but consider this - use your left foot for now, if possible....

Has anyone here tried a DOF Reality 3-axis seat?

Seems like it might be a good compromise, relatively affordable but with enough motion to be interesting. I'd never heard of it until just now though.

I really like the idea of motion in the yaw axis, because I think it would help with learning to recover from oversteer / fishtail in a way that would translate to the real world.

I'd love to get some motion in my sim rig to get additional practice for oversteer recovery.

Looks like lots of fun. Does the yaw motion feel like real oversteer? Are the reflexes you're learning in the sim helping you respond to oversteer for real? Or have you put those reflexes to the test yet?

Yes, one of the most communicative DOF is Traction loss. Yaw is not really the correct term as it is typically referred to rotation about a center, where Traction loss pivots at the front of my sim. And Yes it absolutely helps in all aspects of car control. Obviously several real life cues are missing from a motion sim such as sustained G forces, but it really is quite amazing, the realistic response and feeling you get from my sim especially in VR. EVERYTHING is amplified as your senses are focused.
