Do we need them on track?

I haven’t used TPMS in over a year on my track car

outside of the tpms light being on it doesn’t do anything

Don't need it but damn after the first time not having it, it's 100% helpful. You know if you're over heating your tires, or got a puncture, etc. Don't have to rush to check tire pressures . It's also very accurate

My TPMS have always run 2-3 PSI higher than my Longacre gauge with a relief valve to adjust to ambient. Still nice to have in the car and I run them in my track wheels these days.

I got a second set of wheels/tires for track days and wrestled with the decision to go with TPMS or not. Finally decided I have enough to concentrate on without the annoying TPMS warning flashing on the DIC. So I went with the TPMS.
Drove 250 miles on the track tires to the event at Watkins Glen without issue.

Next morning dropped the pressures to 26 PSI and went out for the first session. By the 3rd lap I got a low pressure warning on the DIC for the left frt tire. Went right back to the paddock and found the left frt down to 18psi. I had no idea there was a problem, had i continued, the results would have been far more serious. At the very least, it saved me from destroying a brand new tire.

More casual track day guys like myself (1 to 3 events/year) may not have the experience to recognize or understand all that the car is trying to tell us. So the extra input is worth the minimal cost IMO

You can get a non C7 specific TPMS for half the price. Just look up 433Mhz sensor and you get a black unit that GM uses on other cars.

first track car didnt have them
now that i do, i couldnt imagine not running them. checking psi the second the checkered drops is invalueable. or if handing seems off mid session you can check pressures.
my psi from last hot laps to checking imidiatly the second you get back to the pits is 2-3 psi difference. theyve either cooled off, or heat soaked up.
the tpms lets me set my hot pressures exactly.
my tmps and tire gauge pressures match exactly.

You don't need them, but without them, you will miss out on the PDR data they offer. Just be sure and understand their margin of error. Mine read about 10% low compared to my Intercomp gauge.
