My last alignment was at -.7* Camber all around.
My race shop recc'd 1/8" Toe Out.
I'm seeing a lot of interior front tire wear and others have mentioned I should go Toe In on my next alignment to compensate for the negative camber and alleviate some of the interior wear on the fronts.
How does Toe Out vs. Toe In make the car handle?
How much Toe In do people normally run?
I have -1.5* camber up front and -1.0* at the back(max it would go), with zero toe both front and back.
I have never used anything but zero toe but base on what others have told me:
For autox I would toe out the front to help the car turn-in quicker and toe in the rear to help reduce power oversteer as you accelerate out of the corner.
For track use I would not toe out the front as it makes the car darty at high speeds. Maybe toe in the rear?
My alignment guy reccomended 1/32" toe-in on the rear as much time as my car spends on road courses. He knows what he's doing and I trust him...but my back tires are so noisy on the street now, I am going back to 0 toe on all four corners.
Street mostly. I like the -.7* camber and feel it's just right. Just want to set the Toe right.
There is no one correct TOE setting for street vs. autocross. In fact, you might want to adjust your toe based on the surface/course you a dealing with on any given day.
Good TOE for a tight (can you say miata?) course will definitely wear your tires out prematurely. In fact, I have a friend who forgot to change after an event and had to replace an expensive set of street tires about 2 weeks later.
Why don't you use stock toe settings for street use and then make toe adjustments for the track your self before the event. Changing the toe is easy. Get a friends help and use a tape measure and make the same adjustment for both sides. Your are just measuring the width difference from a point on the front of the tire to a point on the back of the tires. I can do the back toe in 10 minutes leaving the car on the ground. For the front I have to put the car up on my wood ramps and this takes 15 minutes. I also put a mark using white paint on the bolt and threaded rod to indicate stock setting and the track setting to set it without having to measure. For the track, go to toe out in the front (1/16 to 1/8 inch) and go to 1/4 or 3/8 toe in for the rear. These track alignment settings for toe are what the road course guys are all using. Rear toe in for the C5 helps plant the power in mid speed corners and reduce the power oversteer.
