Default Personal Property Tax on unregistered track car?

For those racers living in states that tax personal property each year, do you have to pay personal property tax on your unregistered track car (one that has a title in your name)???

I did a quick search online and didn’t see it directly addressed. I am moving in the next few years to a state (NC or SC, haven’t decided yet) that has personal property tax so am considering making my track car trailered instead of driving to the track.

Thanks

Wow, interesting prospect!
Oregon doesn't have any kind of 'property tax' thrown in with the registration, but California does.
They assess it during the annual registration. Boats (and airplanes?) have a similar process.
Wonder if it ever occurred to them to pursue it on unregistered vehicles. Even CA cars registered as 'non op' aren't taxed.
Surprised they're missing the opportunity.

In Va PP tax is done via car registration so no registration = no tax. Since ours are daily drivers, both titled and tagged, I don't know for sure about a car that you have a title to but not tagged. Does yours have a title?

In NC you would owe individual personal property on the vehicle. This is what the Mecklenburg County, NC webpage has posted:If you own individual personal property in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, it is taxable if it is located in Mecklenburg County or stored or housed at a storage facility, marina or aircraft hangar in Mecklenburg County as of January 1st of the tax year 1. The following items are considered taxable personal property in North Carolina and are required to be listed by the owner and are subject to tax based on their January 1st value 1:
  • Aircraft, helicopters, blimps and hot air balloons
  • Boats of all kinds (outboard motors and jet skis)
  • Mobile homes with no permanent foundation (skirting that covers the axles, and attached hitch are indicators that the property should be listed)
  • Trailers (untagged and multi-year tagged, including boat trailers)
  • Travel trailers, camper trailers and RVs (untagged and unregistered)
  • Unregistered motor vehicles and unregistered motorcycles
The tax rate for Mecklenburg County property is 47.31 cents per $100 in property value 2. To calculate your county property taxes, take the assessed value of your property, divide by 100, and then multiply by 0.4731 2. For example, if you own a house worth $200,000, your annual county tax bill will be $946.20 2.

You can use the Online Listing System provided by the Assessor’s Office to list your personal property 1. The listing period is during the month of January, and listings received between February 1st and June 30th will be accepted but considered untimely according to statute 1. If you own personal property that must be listed and did not receive a listing form, you may contact the Assessor’s Office at 980-314-4CAO (4226) or IPPEmail@MeckNC.gov to request a form 1.

Forget the race cars, I just want to see the blimps people are paying taxes on!

In VA the tax varies from county to county. In Loudoun, what matters is that the vehicle is garaged in the county and in that case, you owe the tax. You can go online and file that the vehicle isn't garaged in the county and in that case, you won't be taxed. As another example, in Prince William County they don't tax RVs so some folks store their RVs in storage lots there.
