Re: Too hot??? (matlabman)
That's doesn't seem to bad but if you have the money and want your car to last beleive ME get the DRM radiator/oil cooler or something like it. I have seen 310 on hot dyas but at 58,000 it went bang. I will be more sensible this year in monitoring temps. I wouldn't want to see them higher in my car now that 260.
I'd always say (in agreement with JS) that if you've got the $, err on the side of conserving your engine.
With that being said, I don't get nervous or slow down until my oil temp gets to 275. Mobil1 is good (supposedly) to 325-350. That's WAY too high for me but I do know people to hover around the 290-310 range all the time and have had no problems with their engine ever. I once talked to an engineer who worked on the LS1/LS6 projects and he said no harm under 300. After that, the foaming can cause issues. Especially without a dry sump on road courses.
Since my baby is just that, as well as my home equity loan, I keep it at 275 or below to be safe. If I had the money to invest, I'd have a cooler though.
I totally agree. Even with a huge oil cooler, my oil hits 275 pretty often. Also, the OEM oil sender is pretty close to the exhaust (if you have headers, anyway), and seems to read high on my car.
I too had the 320 oil temps back before running good coolers.
