Help me understand how to setup adjustable shocks.
Here is my basic understanding on chassis dynamics. More mechanical grip (or tire pressure on surface) is gained by letting the chassis roll in a turn. Therefore for the following surfaces:
High Grip surface – stiff setting
Medium Grip – medium stiffness
Low Grip (rain) – soft
Is my thinking correct? What does the car do when the settings are too soft? I think that too stiff a setup will yield a lack of grip.
This is basically true, though since it is roll stiffness you want to adjust, ideally what you would want is adjustable sway bars. You still need damping, so shocks are always necessary, but some folks actually disconnect their sway bars in the rain in order to get better weight transfer to the loaded wheels (of course this is under minimum traction conditions).
If you are not talking about rapid transients, as in AX, softening up the shocks might help do the same thing. But under low traction conditions, you are not stressing the shocks much anyway, so it probably would not make a lot of difference.
