Default Timing device??

I have heard that you can buy a timing device for your car that you can use to time your laps at roadcourses on open track days. I guess the timing device costs around $150, sits in your car, and receives some signal sent out by the track. Supposedly, most tracks have this system installed.

Does anyone know anything about this? How does it all work? Where can I get this thing?

I use a Hot Lap Timer. It consists of a sending unit that sits on the pit lane wall and a receiver mounted in the car. The sender puts out a beam that is broken each time you pass and logs your lap times.

There are other systems, but this is the one I was familiar with when i purchased the set up. You should be able to do a web search for this item and be able to order it on-line.

Good Luck!

Here's where got mine:

www.longacreracing.com

The system, with the sending unit is $269. Without it (so, just the part that goes in your car) it's $198. I can't speak for every track, but at the ones I've been to (Pocono, Limerock, Watkins Glen), someone has to put out a sending unit next to the track for it to work. I always bring mine and a tripod, but haven't had to put it out yet. Someone else always does. It's great to have it in the car, so you can work to improve your lap times. Just don't spend too much time looking at it, when you should be driving!! You can review your times after you come off the track, too.

Now, does it take any "calibration", like do I have to "aim" my receiver in my car at the sending unit on the tripod? Or does the sender send out a broad enough signal that just clipping the receiver to my visor will work?

It's a light timing device, the sender emits a light beam with a range of about 60 ft, I usually just lay it on the hot pit wall.
