I rebuilt the transmissions and they lock and release fine. Everything seems right until I run the moter. The left side top cable pops off. It goes on the 3rd groove from the fire wall down. The other cable from that side goes to the second groove. The other side works ok. Has anybody had this problem? Why would that cable keep poping off?

Larry, my guess is there is some slack in it somewhere. Is that cable as tight as the rest? Did you replace the cables, and are they wound around the drums in the same pattern as original? Is your center drum wobbling any perceptable amount? Something has to be creating slack in the cable in order for it to be able to come off. I assume that after installation, you depressed the transmission shaft to tension the cables? Could you tell if the cables tightened up when you released the pulleys?
The cables are tight enough to plink (play a tune). But I noticed after it pops off they are in a released position again. The left side wiper moter mount bolt is to long and is touching the other cable. I think it needs to be about 1/2". I'll do that and try again.
Thanks,
Larry
When you rebuilt the transmissions, did you notice the condition of the pawls and cams (serrations) on the inside of the two pulleys? If these are worn or damaged, the pulleys will not hold together. If this is the case you should be able to test it by locking the transmission and pulling on one of the cables. Hopefully the bolt touching the cable will fix it though.
