What is the preferred wheel rim width for 215-70-15 tires. Presently have them on 8" (c-3) rims but can change them to 6" (oem '67). Rear fenders are flaired so clearence is no problem. They look better on the 8's. Finding some 7" should be no problem as they show up in large numbers at swap meets.
Look up your tire on The Tire Rack (or the manufacturer's web site) or other same size tire if yours is out of production and no longer listed, click "specs" and look at the recommended wheel width range.
IIRC eight inches is beyond the recommended range, which for most 215/70s is 5.5 - 7.5".
Recommended wheel width range is determined by industry standard formulas based on section width and aspect ratio, so they are usually the same range for each size regardless of make or model.
The "design" or "measuring rim" is the wheel width used to measure inflated dimensions and is usually in the middle of the range. Overall tire width varies approximately 40 percent of the difference between measuring rim width and some other wheel width.
Once you get outside the recommended wheel width range, the tire's performance is compromised due to excessive sidewall distortion from the nominal design wheel width
