250/300 hp engine .. ?
My '64 is an early model year build - Sept. 6, 1963, #332 .. One thing I have always wondered about is why the engine in my 4-speed trans car came equiped with the WCFB 250 horsepower carb - but had the 300 horsepower 2 1/2 inch exhaust manifolds and '459' intake manifold . ? .. The air cleaner was the stock snorkel type as well as the PCV system as supplied from the factory.
It would seem highly unlikely a 250/300 'hybrid' set up could have come from the factory this way. Is there a possibility a mistake could have been made at the engine assembly plant but yet the engine was allowed to continue on through the pipeline as assembled .. ? .. Could an early build date have anything to do with it - perhaps a parts shortage or 'leftover' parts from the '63 model year. .? ..
The other thing that comes to mind is someone who owned my car before I did swapped out the 300 hp AFB carb on my car with a 250 hp WCFB carb for whatever reason. Otherwise, everything appeared factory stock.
Have you guys ever heard of anything like this .. ? ..

Seaside ..
I've had this car since 1972. Gas was still cheap - less than $0.40 a gallon .. !
Duke ..
Forgot to add the head and valve size. The heads are the the 461's with 1.94/1.50 valves. The original engine block is long gone. IIRC I believe the original block VIN started with the first letter(s) on the right side stamp pad with either an "F", or "FO" ..

461s were used on '65 250 HP engines, but the small port manifold and WCFB continued and the power rating didn't change. Go figure!
IIRC the WCFB and AFB have different bolt patterns, so they are not interchangeable on the same manifold without an adapter, and I dont know if there is a difference in air horn size.
It's not surprising that the 300 HP engine became standard in '66. The cost was essentially the same, so the 250 HP engine was essentially redundant.

Interesting tidbit about using the 1.94/1.50 valve size in the '65 250 HP engine. It would seem the larger valve size heads wouldn't have made much of a difference when used in conjuction with the small port manifold and WCFB carb. .. Maybe the bean counters got involved - parts consolidation.. ? . .
I seem to remember that the WCFB carb on my engine had a spacer installed underneath it. Otherwise, I didn't need to use an adapter to mate the AFB carb to the intake manifold. The AFB carb on my engine is a later version with the electric choke. This carb also has dual mounting holes in each corner (8 total). Maybe that's why it bolted right up with the existing manifold bolt pattern with no other problems. . ?.
