The steering column drop on my 63 seems incorrect. I have been considering purchasing a new steering column, with tilt to facilitate being able to see the speedometer and tachometer, and allow for my portly personage. The steering wheel covers the guages at 10 and 2 o'clock. My steering column drop has some of the opening in the dash showing above the drop, approximately 3/8". My drop measures 1 3/4" from the bottom of the dash to the center of the steering column (column is 1 1/2" diameter). This would calculate to a rise of nearly 3/4" available with the correct drop. The drop is 2 5/8" across x 3" high (from the bottom of the dash), and it appears the opening in the dash for the steering column is approximately 2 1/4".
This would to one of several conclusions:
a. the steering column could be incorrect
b. the drop is incorrect (possibly another year)
c. the steering wheel is incorrect (measures 14 1/2" diameter, no cuts in the ribs?)
d. the dash opening has been altered
e. maybe all of the above?
