Question for the experts.... I remember reading somewhere that the timing mark position on the 8" harmonic balancer was changed along the years.
I am building a non-correct 365 clone for my 64 and want to make sure I get a matching timing cover/balancer (not the original finned balancer) so when I set the timing, it will be correct. Can someone point me in the right direction? I only want to buy these parts once.
All Chevy balancers had the timing index mark directly in line with the center of the keyway until 1969, when passenger car balancers were changed to move the index line nine degrees counter-clockwise (as viewed from the front) from the keyway, with a corresponding move of the tab on the timing cover (for the new long water pump accessory drive system); this didn't happen on Corvettes until sometime in the 70's. You need one with the timing index mark directly in line with the keyway slot (line extended from the keyway out to the O.D. of the balancer).
