Default Quick timing question?

I can't locate my timing light at the moment, if I want to retard my timing a little do I move the vacuum can closer to the carb or closer to the valve cover when turning the distributor?

Don't get carried away retarding the timing or you'll be posting in a couple of days about an overheating problem.

As an easy way to remember which way to rotate the dist., think of the way the vacuum can "pulls" the breaker plate to advance the timing. The vacuum can pulls the plate CCW (or towards the can). So to retard the timing, rotate the dist. CW.
