Looks like the little plastic end of the speedo cable broke off inside the speedometer . I have the speedo removed from the car , any ideas on how to get the square plastic tip out ? Its inside about an 1/2 " so I cant just grab it with pliers or anything .
Also, I know I will need help putting the steering column back together when this is fixed ! I read a post about using greased leather for the upper bearing in the column , has anyone tried that ??
Try a toothpick with a drop of Krazy Glue on the end, let it set up, then pull the plastic tip out of the speedo. It would help if you'd identify the year of your car (and put it in your profile) so we can give you a good response the first time around . Forget the leather - get a new upper bearing.
I remember seeing an item in the (thick) owner's manual for a new MG-TD back in the 50's that described how to substitute an oily piece of your leather belt for a burned rod bearing "on the roadside" until you could get the car to an "approved repair facility"
I have used a small pneumatic pump that creates a vacuum with a compressor and then using thin tubing to just attach and pull.
If your in socal I can help you out (I have no clue were you are at)
If you do not have access to a vacuum pump (most common made by PIAB) they are common in automated machinery so just find in your local phone book a company that works on automation and just drop on by. It only takes a second and most people are willing to help.
Use a small drill bit, drill out as much as you can then use the tooth pick, glue as mentioned above, or heat a paper clip and insert it into the hole and wait until it cools (should melt the plastic and adhear to the clip) and pull it out with a pair of pliers.
Let us know what worked for you.
Good luck
