Default 66 temp gauge

My temp gauge will peg out and then go back to a normal 180 to 190 degree reading. This is a rapid change in temp so I've ruled out thermostat. Is it gauge, wiring or sending unit?

When you say "peg" do you mean it jumps all the way over and then jumps back or it just climbs up and then eases back? Mine would warm up, show a normal temp, and then jump. Changed the wire, the sender, and then resigned myself that it must be the guage. On the back of the guage, there is a third post that nothing connects to. It would short out against the back of the instrument panel after things warmed up. I filed the hole for it on the back of the instrument panel a little larger so it wouldn't touch and never had the problem again.

You are correct, it jumps to max and then jumps back. I'll have a look at the third post to see if that's the problem, thanks!

After buying 6 different promised to work sending units from all the fancy corvette places. The $6 Wiss T5 one from Auto zone did the trick And that was after 2 years of screwing around!
