What is up with my Speedo all of the sudden. It has started bouncing periodically when I’m driving. I pulled and cleaned the cable this weekend - no help. Any Ideas?
if the cable is good and not in a bind the other things to check are the gear in the trans,if its good your speedo head might be worn.
Odometer work? does it bounce all the time or just at certain speeds?
Git-r-done quickly...
As I have warned about this on another thread, If that needle gets to bouncing it can and will, bounce right into the 160 MPH stop pin and break the needle off!
Then you will have the pleasure of dismantling the cluster!
LOL, Mike
The speedo and tach in my 56 started bouncing so I sent them to North Hollywood Clock and Speedometer in North Hollywood, CA for a rebuild. I did not have them restored, even though they can, just rebuilt. No bounce now.
Jason, The odometer quit almost a year ago and it seems to bounce when it pleases regardless of speed. The cable looks old but looked ok & didn't seem to bind. I think you & and Mike & Collin made the point. I'll start with the tyranny gears.
Joe, How much did the rebuild cost if you don’t mind my asking? Sounds like it's time for that too if it will get my odometer going.
Had the same thing happen to me on my 63 SWC, the cable housing has old grease in it that causes the cable to bind. Get a new one, they are around $30, and save yourself a lot of headaches and the potential for a busted speedo.
Don't forget the trick.... go to your local hardware store and get two 1/4 x20 by 4 inch long cap screws. Where your gauge cluster is screwed to the dash, take the first and last screws out and replace them with the 4 inch cap screws, then take the rest of the dash screws out. Now the guage cluster can "slide out" to give you enough room back there to disconnect the speedo cable head..... Good luck.....
Put a new tach in my '65. Went for my 1st cruise and lo and behold that new tach is bouncing all over. At it's worst my old tach never came close to being this bad. So now I'm thinking what to do-send my old one for a rebuild or fight with the vendor for a refund. Usually I don't have a problem with their parts and I know they don't make'em they just sell'em.
Although the tach was a pain in the ... the cruise was great. The car ran strong. I checked everything before I went. Nothing leaked, brakes excellent, got more than a few thumbs up.
