Default First Ride

With everything put together, I was able to take the 64 with the 365 dressed/LT-1 cammed 327 out for a quick 5 minute ride yesterday.

What a difference from the 300hp configuration! With the M20 trans and 3.36 rear, the car takes off effortlessly. Once on the gas, the difference was nothing short of amazing. Great power throughout the RPM range. About scared myself when I opened it up. First, I thought I was slipping the clutch during the 1-2 shift only to figure out it was the tires spinning. Then came the 2-3 shift when the car went completely sideways. Guess my rudimentary alignment needs some professional help. After a couple of runs up and down the street (back road, no kids), I put it away before I hurt myself.

Power steering worked perfectly, brakes whoa'd me down without any pulling, rode real smooth with the new Bilstein HD's.

A couple of small things to finish it up, and should be 100% roadworthy by next weekend.

Yup, I'm a happy camper....

I'll be in the 63-67 registry at Carlisle. Hopefully, the tires will last until then.....

man, I love that "thought the clutch was slipping only to discover it was breaking loose"! Yeah baby, that's what I'm talkin about! Can't wipe that grin off your face too easily!

Lines from the Beach Boy's song "little deuce coupe" come to mind!

I get pushed out of shape
and it's hard to steer
when I get rubber in all four gears

you must have built that L76 right!

It's amazing how easily everything worked out. I just followed all the instructions, recommendations and knowledge gained from the experts on this Forum.

From setting the valves, timing and distributer, having the carb rebuilt and flow tested by an outfit that got it right, cooling, proper placement of various items on the engine, body mount tips, suspension tips...... And most everything is as GM engineered it to begin with. Everything worked the first time.

I'm still surprised how quiet the mechanical lifters are when adjusted correctly. I can remember some of my older creations that clattered loudly.

Is this fun or what?

Of even greater relevance to Vette owners is that other Beach Boys song, "Shut Down", with the drag race between a fuelie Sting Ray and a "413". A 413 is an old Mopar engine (a "Max-Wedge" engine, used in a variety of late 50's and early 60's Mopar products) - more or less the Mopar equivalent of a 409.

(Brian Wilson/Roger Christian)

Tach it up, tach it up
Buddy gonna shut you down

It happened on the strip where the road is wide
(Oooo rev it up now)
Two cool shorts standin' side by side
(Oooo rev it up now)
Yeah, my fuel injected Stingray and a four-thirteen
(Oooo rev it up now)
Revvin' up our engines and it sounds real mean
(Oooo rev it up now)

Tach it up, tach it up, tach it up
Buddy gonna shut you down

Declinin' numbers at an even rate
(Oooo movin' out now)
At the count of one we both accelerate
(Oooo movin' out now)
My Stingray is light the slicks are startin' to spin
(Oooo movin' out now)
But the four-thirteen's really diggin' in
(Oooo movin' out now)

Gotta be cool now power shift here we go

Superstock Dart is windin' out in low
But my fuel injected Stingray's really startin' to go
To get the traction I'm ridin' the clutch
My pressure plate's burnin' that machine's too much

Pedal's to the floor hear the dual quads drink
(Oooo pump it up now)
And now the four-thirteen's lead is startin' to shrink
(Oooo pump it up now)
He's hot with ram induction but it's understood
(Oooo pump it up now)
I got a fuel injected engine sittin' under my hood
(Oooo pump it up now)

Shut it off, shut it off buddy now I shut you down
Shut it off, shut it off buddy now I shut you down
Shut it off, shut it off buddy now I shut you down
Shut it off, shut it off buddy now I shut you down
Shut it off, shut it off buddy now I shut you down

But in real life the 413 would dust a 409 and most likely a FI 327 as well.

The 413 is the same basic engine as the 440 and was extremely successful on the Nascar circuit. We all remember Richard Petty #43 in that '63 Plymouth.

But remember the elephant was always afraid of the mouse. At the drags the big block Mopar guys hated that little high winding eng. It could catch them at the end.
