I want to clean up and repaint my PS pump. Apparently I need a puller to remove the pully - is there a special one I need or any general purpose puller would work.
It seems that if I want to remove the bracket I have to remove the pully - my bolt (the one that passes through the pump and attaches to the bracket) is bent. Unless that's not a bolt but a stud and a bolt?
If you have a stock pump, the lower mounting has a bolt in the front of the pump and a stud in the back. The rear of the mounting bracket should have a slot for the lower stud to slide out of. The upper rear adjusting nut is also on a stud. Mine comes out without removing the pulley.
There's a special puller made for most PS pump pulleys, my local parts store had one to loan me - BUT - don't do this if you dont have to. Sometimes that pulley refuses to come off, puller or not. Then you'll have a broken flange on your pulley. I had one that was so stubborn that I went from puller to propane to acetylene. Finally had everything so buggered up that I had to cut it off to get the store a decent pump core back and buy a new pulley for my new pump. Then again, it may come right off..........
If your pulley has a nut holding it on, it may just be rusted to the pump shaft, and some PB Blaster or Kroil will loosen it up enough to pull it off. If it's a later setup with no nut and a "press-on" pulley and a threaded hole in the end of the pump shaft, you'll need a special puller to get the pulley off.

Mine's bolted but since I was just prettyin' it up I decided to leave it. Thanks! Now I know how to rescue my pully when the day comes that this old pump dies.

When that day comes, don't bang or hammer on the pulley or the shaft; that can drive the rear pressure plate off its O-ring seal, then you have real problems.
